Modeled in 3dsmax. Rendered in LuxRender (v1.0RC4).
A sphere, consisting of just 16 segments, converted to editable poly object, and the edges outlined, with a shell modifier applied. Then the sphere was sliced symmetrically, in a radius along the X axis, for a count of 3, and the result mirrored, to give you the sculpture you see here. The holes were created the usual way: select faces ->inset->delete. Hope you like.
