'Splash pages' for short stories were very common in mid-century 'home' magazines and provided quite an interesting showcase for illustrators. Worth a Google! Thanks for looking.

Yes, remember them well. In art school these illustrations were derided by our tutors as "chocolate box" paintings. However over the years I have come to admire this genre as much as any. By the way, sitting out in the sun in a suit almost always brings on heat stroke - you can tell by his silly grin he's about to pass out :-) Gary
