Description

IDOLS FOR IDIOTS We’re awed by Easter Island faces caught In stony stares at vastness; quite amazed By pyramids and hieroglyphs that brag Down centuries why Egypt owned great gods. We ponder how some primitives could build A Stonehenge just to track their seasons; why Old sailors braved uncharted seas to prove A Ptolemy was wrong. Our Earth is round. We recently applauded astronauts Who challenged distance just to walk the moon. All these are heroes who deserve Their glamour titles of … CELEBRITY. We say we “get” why teen testosterone Adores its GA GA’s, Beatles, all those grinds Of crotchy Elvis Michael Jacksons; then There’s us, poor wrinkled refugees from time Still mesmerized by trivial pursuits From politicians skinning grizzly bears To interventions alcoholics who Insist they’ve tuned in Armageddon’s God To know exactly when He’ll cash out death’s Dark chips. The tragedy in all of this Is we’re confronted by a universe Demanding humans mirror majesty Then only hears the whimpering of dwarfs. jo_dis 2010

You have such a way with words, much like a tapestry. We are but ants.

I had a college roommate who insisted forty years ago that we lived in a society that valued style over substance. Where else would a learned person be ridiculed as an "intellectual?" Where else are people proud of their ignorance? T.S. Eliot was right; "This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper."

The Arts have declared war on the Sciences — a war for the soul of modern man. Waged on a number of fronts (philosophical, literary, environmental, feminist, and other) this army of the Postmodernist and Cultural Constructivist seek to deny the contribution of reason, the rational mind, and especially knowledge to the grand endeavor that is civilization. For them the great achievements of history, such as constructing the pyramids or evolving a written language (when there were precious few examples of engineered structures, writing, or language) become acts of mere ego which they feel comfortable in dismissing as “pyramids and hieroglyphs that brag …” Should (we who read this) not question the arrogance and ego of elites who deny human accomplishments from the construction of the pyramids to walking on the moon? Is it not egoist to pronounce oneself as judge over all of human history and accomplishment? You damn astronauts as “celebrities” ignoring the monumental body of knowledge required, the mastery of science, and the courage of men of conviction who would risk all to elevate human understanding and knowledge – yet what do you offer? The central ambition of the cultural constructivist program is to explain the deepest and most enduring insights and accomplishments of humanity as a corollary of social power games, and ideological agenda. Perhaps the author would prefer to labor away with tools invented in biblical times. Does anyone else see the irony of this hatred for the achievements of civilization pontificated on an internet web page accessed by a modern PC? I see nothing grand, original, or even thought provoking here –I see only a perverse hatred for man and a desire to self destruction, I see the nihilism of one who has denied his own humanity, I see envy, and most of all I see fear. What I am curious about is why this author is so afraid. Why is this author so terrorized by the achievements of mankind’s civilization? In these verses (and the others by this author) one can clearly see the fear maddened reaction of a cornered unreasoning beast. To you I say: “Stop being so afraid and come out of that corner.” To you I say: “Come join the men of Reason, and Knowledge, the men of Science, and Capitalist endeavor … Come, even you might, one day, accomplish great things …”
