Description

Badwater on the left is 282-ft. (85.5m) below sea level, is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere. The salt flats are known as the 'Devil's Golfcourse'. In the distance are the Panamint Mountains, bordering Death Valley on the west. Directly in line with the small island in the foreground is Telescope Peak (11049-ft). Orographic uplifting of Pacific Lows results in precipitation on the windward side of the Sierra Navadas, leaving the leeward side of the mountains, including Death Valley mostly dry. Death Valley has an annual evaporation rate of 150-inches and an annual precipitation rate of less than 2-inches. Occasional infrequent rains result in runoff from the surrounding mountains, primarily the Amargosa Range along the east side of Death Valley, which brings salts and minerals to the valley floor. These rains sometimes form a lake. After the water evaporates, the additional salts and minerals are left. I wondered what the temperature was here at Badwater when Furnace Creek recorded 134F. Probably higher. This picture was taken on 23 September 2008. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my recent uploads and a special 'Thank you' to those that may have added some of them to their favorites, Sig...

Makes you want to go to the Dead Sea and be at a lower point. Just in case you hit rock bottom.

I have to agree with Andrea, some fantastic places you have taken us to just lately Sig, and I have enjoyed each and every one of them so far. Super pano, I would like to take a walk here to check out the lake bed, not the whole 18 holes though. Lol. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!
