Description

point me in the direction of Liverpool Docks "? Herman Goerings 'slimmer ' Brother looking for directions....one of many re-enactors at the Hooton Park Aviation and Militaria Fair last weekend. In 1930, Hooton officially became Liverpool Airport, a position it held for three years until near neighbour Speke ( now Liverpool John Lennon Airport ) took over in 1933. During the inter-war years Hooton was a thriving industrial complex. On 10 February 1936, No 610 (County of Chester) Squadron was formed at Hooton as a light bomber unit in the Auxiliary Air Force taking possession of one of the Belfast hangars to house its Avro Tutors and Hawker Harts when flying commenced in the May of that year. On 1 January 1939, 610 Squadron re-mustered as a fighter unit flying Hawker Hinds until the beginning of the war when it received Fairey Battle's and then Hurricanes. These were soon given up in favour of Spitfires. All civil flying had now ceased, apart from de Havilland Dragon’s on army co-operation work and eighteen of Hooton's considerable population of light aircraft were immobilised and stored under the old grandstand. All were destroyed in July 1940 in a disastrous fire.

That's OK if there's no He111 parked behind the hangar! The interesting fact is Herman Goring had a brother who was not at all impressed with his membership in the Nazi party. The two associated throughout the war as brothers. Herman's brother was interrogated concerning Herman's activities during WWII at the Nuremberg trials. Nice fun photo of this fellow. It looks awfully stuffy wearing that yellow jacket (flak jacket?). Thanks for more history about the airfield! Keep up the good work! :-)
