Subject: Help with Nvidia Iray and GPU usage

LilLili ( ) posted Wed, 23 September 2020 at 4:42 PM ยท edited Thu, 28 March 2024 at 9:07 AM

Hi all, Is there a way to make the Nvidia Iray utilize more GPU memory? I have an i9 and a 2080Ti (11gig), but rendering uses 100% of my CPU, and 0% of my GPU. It feels like rendering takes a really long time so I'm hoping there is a way to let Iray utilize my GPU, but I dont know anything about Render settings.

Check --------------> Render Settings ---------> Advanced

You can select your graphics card or cpu here.

If I select only my gpu, nothing renders in my window :(

Hmm, I would suggest making sure both your Graphic card drivers and Daz Studio are both the latest versions available.

you have 11 gb on your gpu, I have 8.Do not forget that daz can use a lot of the available space on your gpu. You dont really have 11 GB free, more like 9 or 10. Make sure you have the latest drivers and the lastest studio version. There is also a bug in daz studio that it sometimes doesnt render with gpu, you have to restart studio in order to use the gpu again.

Also i would first make a small render and see if studio uses the GPU( say 400x400). You can see on the renderpane if daz uses the gpu or CPU( you can see CPU in the renderpane, if studio switched over to cpu]

I have had this happen and had to downsize the render size. sometimes i can render larger but than i have less content in the scene.

Is it possible to utilize both CPU and GPU? If I select both in settings, Daz only uses my CPU. Is that the bug you mentioned?

If the GPU is checked, the drivers are sufficiently up-to-date, and the scene fits into its memory then the GPU will be used 9and the CPU, if that is checked). Try a really simple scene (just Create>New Primitive and add any you like with its default values) - that should render really quickly, so after it's done go to Help>Troubleshooting>View Log File, scroll to the end and in the last few lines there should be a summary of which things did what to the render - was the GPU used according to that?

Do bear in mind that, by default, Windows Task Manager will not show the Iray usage - if you go to the Performance tab and set one of the graphs for the GPU to show CUDA (or Compute 0 if there's no option for CUDA) you will get a more accurate result.

So with both CPU and GPU checked, it takes roughly 20 minutes or more to fully render a scene with only Victoria 8, and nothing else. Does that sound normal? It seems really long to me. All my drivers are up to date, and I'm using default render settings, apart from the check boxes for CPU and GPU.

This might be the issue:

I downloaded and installed CUDA 11.1, but still getting errors :(

You need to update your GPU driver. Unless you are on a Mac (which I assume you are not) you don't download CUDA separately. Or you mat need to update DS, I don't think you've said which version you are on.

Oh my gosh I feel so dumb. Its because I've been still using 4.10. As soon as I upgraded to 4.12, the issue went away and Iray can now do ~1000 iterations per minute

I am glad you got it figured out. 1000 a minute? At what res? I have the same card and do my stuff in 4k,4096 X 4096 compression (basically no compression) and use a lot of Sub D. I am about at 2 hours.
