Subject: "out of memory" warning

malcolm474 ( ) posted Mon, 18 November 2019 at 8:25 PM · edited Wed, 20 March 2024 at 3:43 AM

I was working with Poser 10 today. I got a warning that I was out of memory and that I should save my work. Before I had a chance to save my work, the program closed. It is very frustrating, since I had been working on the program for a long time and lost all my work. This is a quirk that I have experience with Poser ever since I started using it long ago. Poser warns you that you are out of memory and need to save your work, and then Poser closes before you have a chance to do it. It would be nice if somebody fixed this.

If you have got a 64 bit system it might be a good idea to consider upgrading to poser 11. Poser 10 is a 32 bit program and as such can only use a limited amount of of ram, about 2gig if I remember correctly, while poser 11 is a 64 bit program and can essentially use all your system memory. After this happened to me I decided then to upgrade to poser pro 2014 which was 64 bit and never had the trouble again.

Since the only version of poser now available is poser 11.2, and only in 64 bit form, I would say the chance of any updates to poser 10 as zero.

I appreciate your messages, Nails60. You really make a conscientious effort to address these concerns. That being said, I have Poser 11 Pro and it was working fine until I installed the upgrade. Now, the animation palette takes forever to refresh every time I edit something. I couldn't figure out anyway to address this, so I had to abandon Poser 11 altogether and revert to Poser 10. There is a tension between the demands of these upgrades and the ability of computers to meet them. I think that they should make it possible to edit the functions provided to accommodate computers that can't handle the full program.

Yes I saw your post on another thread after I posted this message, but too late to delete it.

I have not seen this error myself since the days of Poser 4... which OS are you operating on? I recommend frequent saves - I have lost progress to crashes myself, it is very frustrating.

At least with Poser 11 you can set up the auto save, it can be a pain at times but it should stop the loss of a total project. Being able to limit the auto save time and number of versions also helps limits the impact. I do not have too many crashes with Poser 11 but auto save has saved me a great deal of time all the same.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

I use Poser 11 Pro and since the latest upgrade was able to pose my G2f/m just fine, Since the upgrade every time I I try to pose these characters I find that the clothing poses but the character does not. Not sure what I am doing wrong of if this is a known glitch.

Also, maybe I have stayed with V4 much too long but when I try to use G3F some of the models turn mannequin black and look like a store model from a store display, what did I do wrong? BTW they work just fine In Firefly just not Superfly.

I know these are probably answer back in archives some place but I got a little disconnected for a while after losing a family member for several years, and want to get back into my old hobby again. Thanks for any help!

The problem with Superfly renders showing figures as mannequin black is a common problem with figures and not limited to V4. While SM tried to make Superfly backwards compatible there are some nodes used in Firefly that Superfly just does not understand. For most the solution is to run the figure through EZSkin 3 - (Free stuff @ snarlygribbly.org/poser) which will correct the majority of the problems. Another problem that comes up is either ghostly eyes where they are rendered milky white or washed out tones, the latter not only on figures but props also this is almost always down to the use of 'alternate specular' in the material set up which again Superfly has problems with. That is not to say it cannot be used with Superfly but generally the way it is set up for Firefly does not work in Superfly. It should also be noted that such problems are often the result of 'cheats' used in Firefly that are no longer required in Superfly.

If you want to look in further depth is you go to the material room and use advanced any node that is an issue for Superfly will be denoted by a dotted line between nodes.

Thanks for the reply, I am having more problems with gen 2 characters than I do with V4 with which I have been using Snarly's EZskins3 program since it came out. I do really like its performance. it does not however support the Gen 2 Characters, but the clue you gave about checking nodes will be investigated and I m sure I will find a work around! Thanks again Hornet, you input is invaluable to me... hope I can return the favor one day!

Happy if I have helped, I am afraid I do not use gen 2 characters so I am not able to help in that respect. I am afraid I moved on to Dawn SE and as she worked 'out of the box' I took the easy way out.
