For P9/Pro2012 on, you'd want Snarlygribbly's updated version, Particles 3+. Poser's Python version changed in P9.
Also, you need to consider whether the ball is solid or hollow, and whether the pieces are rigid or soft.

Very good points, mate. A solid ball made of - for example - concrete will explode in a completely different way from a soccer ball.
