Subject: Rigging question

Arkine ( ) posted Tue, 24 January 2017 at 8:25 AM · edited Wed, 21 February 2024 at 9:03 PM

I'm working on a car model, and I just had a question for everyone as to their preferred method of rigging lights. Currently, I have a bounding box with shape controllers in it that control the lights, but I was considering setting up an attribute holder on the Master Controller and creating spinners to control them instead--although, that means going back and disconnecting everything from the shape controllers--more work. So, would it be worth it to set up the attribute holder and spinners? Or should I leave the controls as they are? Any thoughts would be very helpful. Thanks!

I would say spinners sound more logical and easier to keyframe. If you plan to sell or redistribute this model for a commission then I'd go that extra step and rig them with spinners and master controller. Just be sure you're clear as to how they work in your documentation. If they are for your own use, then whatever you feel comfortable with is fine.

Mainly for my own project, but I was thinking of selling a version of it--I've seen very few that are actually rigged, for 3DS at least, or if they are they're extremely expensive. Anyhow, thanks so much for the reply. 😁

Don't know if you saw this already, but ScriptSpot.com has a few scripts that might make your work a little easier. For example, there's a Vehicle Rigger script that will add controllers to the wheels etc. automatically.

Just saw this script on Scriptspot today and thought immediately of this thread. Here's another instance of a vehicle rigging system for cars in 3dsMax. the Arac Bone Rig script will automate the bone-based rigging of a four tire wheel vehicle in 3ds max and animate on a spline. With the flexibility and usefulness of the bone bone system we can send the tool we rigged and animated to a game engine like unity yada unreal engine 4 and we can easily use it in the project we want. Perhaps you will find it useful.

The only downfall, if you can call it that, is the script appears to have parameters in another language. I don't' know if there is an English version. However, the process and controls seem very self-explanatory and the script seems quite powerful for what it does.
