Subject: Freezing up issue

DarwinsMishap ( ) posted Sun, 11 October 2015 at 9:28 AM ยท edited Sun, 10 March 2024 at 9:08 PM

Hey there,

I have the Dusk figure, no textures and a reference photo I am working off of. I choose the Clone bush with Alt to pinpoint the reference area on the reference photo and go to the Dusk figure to paint-say eyebrows- and the program freezes up on me and paints nothing.

I've saved the project, closed B3D, re-opened and tried and it still does it. I've closed B3D, started a new project with the figure without maps and it still does it. I've closed again, started a new project with Dusk and his textures and it still freezes completely, and when it finally unfreezes nothing paints.

I'm confused, because I started off with no issues. I changed the brush settings a little bit and now this happens. There is no reset to default settings that I can find and I will look through the manual, but I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue and if it was fixed.

Thanks!

Screen shot of brush settings shown- I can't remember if they reverted back to the default after closing/opening the program four or five times, but this is what they are at now. brush settings.jpg

Hello DarwinsMishap,

The area of the brows is partially masked by the "eyeslash_ large". That's maybe the reason why it does not apply when you try to apply texture. With Dusk selected, Select them with the picker set to material and menu/hide selected. Import your image as reference plane and place/size it. Once done, select dusk with your picker set to "object" (instead, paint will not apply) Now, select your clone brush (your image is displaying "paint brush"). Press "Alt" to select your initial reference on the image plane, release "alt" and paint the corresponding area on your character. It should work properly now. As you working on great angle area, select "fade by angle" on your settings to avoid ugly strokes on side of the face. Could you tell me what size of map you did used for face or if you are using layers? Let me know, Hope it helps, Best regards,

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. All of his lashes as well as the surface layer for the eye reflections are hidden. The freezing starts when I try to clone the texture from the reference photo to Dusk's face.

I got how to do the process of importing the image to use it as a reference and the clone using the Alt and fade from tutorials- the resolution of the reference photo used is just over 1 MB.

The freezing started when I changed the Density and Precision in B3D from the settings you see in the photo to 80/100. Even after changing it back to what is in the screen shot and closing the program completely and starting with a new project and re-importing everything it still freezes with the shown settings.

Hello DarwinsMishap,

Ok. I did try to reproduce it without success, it's working fine on my side, even with changing to extreme settings. What size of maps are you using (4096X4096?) and what settings did you applied? Freezing seems to be related to calculation. Size of reference image is not related to the current issue, the more precise it is, the more accurate your texture will be. You did load Dusk cr2, so, you already load a bunch of maps. Did you set a new layer? Be sure while painting that Dusk is selected. This area of the character has many angles. Could you try to re create a blank new project, do the same with "fade by angle" checked. Changing precision and density could lead to heavy calculation. If dusk face is in 4096x4096, then, your processor will have to calculate 16.8 million of pixels to apply the desired texture on every stroke multiplied by the number of maps.... If you change Density, then, you will get more calculation. The same for resolution. If you are using layers, all the maps are duplicated, so, it can lead to low memory and overcharge your CPU.. You did not mentioned your other settings. It seems you are using "Standard" version. When using clone brush, your destination object should be selected and once you set your reference point, you must stay in clone brush mode (your image is showing paint brush) Your Freezing should be related to heavy calculation. Could you please give more information in order to find why your first project had an issue? PS: To do this kind of work, it is easier to use the brush tile setup mode to place exactly the brows at the right place. PS2: Default setting for this brush are spacing=10 and density=100

Hope it helps a little,

Best regards,

Hey Fly,

Thank you for answering. I'm still very new at this program, so half of what I'm doing is by using other tutorials and/or guessing. Reference is 1.06 MB at 4992x3360 The first attempt I did that worked had all of the maps that imported from the cr2 file changed to new names, I don't think I did that on the other tests. The second project is when the freezing started, without the map names being changed. No layers on the first non-freezing or the other three new projects I started since at this point I'm experimenting and didn't want to get too far into layers just yet. One new project that had the freezing issue had the fade by angle checked. I turned it off after, and it kept freezing so I closed it and started a new project again. I am using the Standard version, yes. When I use the clone brush the reference photo is chosen for a reference point, then I select Dusk to start painting (I tried the paint brush after the second or third re-start to see if that would work). I tried using a Dusk with no textures imported but didn't make new layers to paint on-not sure if that was a good or bad thing.

I'm not sure what else info I can give just yet, since half of this is guess work, but I'll try again with the default settings you gave (THANK YOU) and the tips. I'll update again when I can, and thank you again!

Hello DarwinsMishap,

Can you please verify that you are using version 6.1.0.1? Please note that if you do not import textures, you will need to create one and assign the map in the "Manager" area, otherwise any type of painting will not work (because it doesn't have a texture to show on). Also, if you do import textures, please make sure the textures are assigned properly in the "Manager" area. If they aren't, you could still have the same paint issues as if textures weren't imported.

A lot of big calculations on textures can cause a long delay, so I recommend "hiding" the parts of the body you are not currently working on. Just use the "picker" on Hot select (so you can see what parts you are selecting) and then go to "Edit" and "Hide Selected Surface. Then, make sure in the "Maps" tab that you have clicked on the Map that you want to edit. Make sure the Map you want to edit is assigned to it's proper place in the "Manager". Then, painting options shouldn't get locked up, or delay as much.
