Subject: Help with lights, simple n00b question (I hope)

I want to shut off the lights while I'm working and just rely on spotlights for preview (and render, for that matter) how do I get rid of the blue glow of death and with no lights created see nothing but black?

Thanks.

I'm guessing you are using Iray. Look on the render tab in the Environment section. By default, Iray sets the Environment Mode to Dome Only or Dome and Scene with a low resolution HDRI on the Dome. The Draw Dome property also defaults to off, so you cannot see the Dome in the render (but you will see it in reflections if you have a highly reflective object). To render with only scene lights, set the Environment Mode to "Scene Only". This will turn off the dome, which I suspect is what is giving you the blue glow.

DAZ also has a Headlamp by default. It will add it to the scene at the camera location if you do not have any scene lights. To get rid of the headlamp, go to the General section of the Render Settings for Iray and find the Auto Headlamp property. It can have two values, "Never" or "When No Scene Lights". The "When No Scene Lights" is default. If you change it to "Never" you should get a dark render.

Cool, thanks! But I'd also like to have the preview window be free of default light so I can see what I'm doing when placing spots.

It seems that no matter what I check or uncheck, preview always has this headlamp on even if I make a new camera and tell it not to and be sure to select it as the camera I'm looking through.

Preview always blue a lit up like a Christmas tree. I do toggle the lightbulb button and I can see a slight darker tint when my created light isn't placed on model, but otherwise it's still really lit up. I want it pitch black until light is illuminating something.

Or can it not do this?

Iray Preview will give you your full light solution if it is blending into photoreal. If you just want to mess with Spotlight placement, Switch your blend mode to interactive, and depending on your hardware, you may also benefit from setting your final render to interactive during preview. If your hardware is not good enough to work to a degree you are happy with in the main viewport, you can, instead, set the aux viewport to Iray mode. Setting both to Iray will bog down your system, regardless of hardware, and is definitely not recommended.

You can adjust your settings, except for setting the final render to interactive (Render settings pane), in the draw settings pane. Set it to best fit with your hardware.
