Subject: Main Difference between Mention & Quote

@everyone

In this post I'd like to explain the difference between a Forum "Mention" and "Quote". Below each message you will see two distinct buttons one for a "Mention" the other a "Quote".

A quote is a simple way to reply to someone within the same thread or on the same page of a conversation.

However, let's say you needed to reference a post across different/multiple threads. This is what a mention is for.

A mention will not only link to that post within yours, but will also place a small reference under the post being mentioned so that way users can easily travel to and from the mention.

It is recommended to only use a mention when the post you are referring to is either on another page or in a different thread.

If the post you want to mention is on a separate page (which likely it is) or you want to mention multiple posts you can simply copy the ids from the top of any post and place it in yours.

Too bad those switches aren't available for a thread's opening post - I would have liked to have quoted you in this response! But, then again, if I could have done that, I wouldn't have needed to post in the first place.

While it may seem a little odd, wouldn't any response after the OP be considered to be answering or in reference to the OP making the quotation of the OP irrelevant? Of course if your comment was in relationship to a later comment than a quote would be needed to show the context.

In other words there is no reason to quote an OP as an association to its content is assumed unless something else is stated. As your comment above demonstrates anyone who read the OP will decipher its meaning without the need for you to quote the OP.

Have you seen how off topic these threads can get? Sometimes we need to quote the op just so they know we're answering them. Plus, we may want to mention it elsewhere

You can always just use the > at the start of a line and paste what you're referring to.

Example

Because that's much easier than just clicking the quotation symbol that appears on every single other post in a thread except for the opening post? :) What about making a reply on page three of a thread and just enclosing the text in quotes without a user-name? That works great! Can't wait to try it! :) (Being sarcastic, but not in a derogatory way, just a bit perplexed at what passes for forum design around these parts.)

Adding a bunch of emojis since smiles aren't supported and because I find emojis terribly annoying... ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„ (Insert smileys where desired.)
