Subject: Tutorial: Model A Nested Dodecahedron For 3D Print in Blender 2.75

Hi, everyone.  This latest video is the Blender edition of my recent modeling tutorial for 3dsmax, in which I demonstrate a relatively quick and painless strategy to achieving a "nested" dodecahedron math model.  This fascinating shape is really much less complex than it appears, but creating it will take us through some very interesting, and useful techniques to seamlessly connect concentric polygonal shapes, using the Loop Tools' Bridge command. Along the way, we also utilize advanced tactics for selecting and isolating interconnected surface elements on cumbersome geometry.  The resulting model is ideal for 3D Printing; as an interesting piece of jewelry, decor; or simply as a digital design asset.

As always, thanks for watching!  Please don't forget to subscribe to my Youtube channel for many more tutorials like this one, for both Blender 3D, and Autodesk 3dsmax software packages.  Hope you find them useful.

  • bows to the master *

That's crazy.  I was actually starting to think this one wasn't gonna get made, but you proved me wrong.  This does raise the question about improving the bridge tools in Blender, because the sorcery you performed there to get those to work right I would have never-- in a million years-- thought to do on my own.  Just goes to show that ANYTHING is possible in Blender. Thanks for another great vid. There's tons of useful info in this one.

Very detailed, and articulate tutorial, Lux.  I learned a couple things here, like what Freestyle Face Marks are actually useful for. LOL.

Tools :  3dsmax 2015, Daz Studio 4.6, PoserPro 2012, Blender v2.74

System: Pentium QuadCore i7, under Win 8, GeForce GTX 780 / 2GB GPU.

Blender rocks!  I've seen shapes like this around, but in no way ever thought about modelling them, because I always thought it would take HOURS, not minutes. This is great!

WOWZA! You did a great job there. You nailed the modelling, and really took it to another level with that material. So what did you render with there? Is that Cycles? That would make a really cool pendant or something, or better yet, a decor sculpture for a bookshelf or interior design item. Tell us more about the material there. Is it just a glass shader, or something more?

@Vaskania, good work! The object looks like it turned out great. Hope you had fun creating it.

Thanks for the heads-up about this tutorial Vaskania. I'm definitely going to have to give this one a try.

Oh, and I second HMorton. I also wouldn't mind knowing how you accomplished those materials. I know you've rendered in Cycles before, so am pretty sure you did so again here, but I really like to know more about the materials, as they look wonderful. 😉

I just noticed that the embedded videos in all of my tutorial threads are not showing up now, since the new forum changes. Unfortunately, if you are new to this forum, these threads will now seem very strange, because you're not going to see the embedded Youtube videos I had previously posted in the OP. So, I'll post a link directly to the video again here. Hopefully, this problem can be fixed in the future, but I don't know if it can. I have many many older threads that had videos embedded in them as part of the OP, so all of those will now likely not contain any links to the videos. I'll see if I can speak to someone about that, and maybe get it corrected. Otherwise, I'll have to go back to every thread and post the text links to the videos.

Here's the direct link for this one:

Thanks again, everyone, and sorry if these threads appear broken at the moment.

Thanks guys! That final image was post processed in Photoshop to give it a little more oomph to bring out the colors. Original posted below.

@HMorton/MissB- the material is just the basic glass bsdf/beckman/0 roughness/default 1.45 IOR with each one set to a different color. It is a cycles render at 1000 samples. The flooring is just a basic plane with with glossy/beckman/.50 roughness. I also use emissive planes over the normal lights. It's set behind the camera parented to it so it'll move with the camera.

@Lux- Thank you! I look forward to messing with your other tutorials now. xD

Thanks for posting the behind the scenes! Such a simple setup, but the render is incredible. Maybe could use some more samples when you really look closely, but I feel sometimes that a little bit of grain in Cycles can add a layer of detail too. Seems like you really know how to light a scene, and have a good understanding of camera angles. I hope to get to that level of render understanding in Cycles some day as well. Right now, I'm still mastering the modelling and creation aspect.
