Well, right now all I got are wips.

Wips of the hairy kind, but Superfly nonetheless 😁 I love how good Superfly is at rendering all those hair strands. They don't slow it down.

I did not save the file after the render so I can't tell you which lights I used, but I can tell you they were Superfly specific lights because I always use SF lights.

I render CPU. These are my settings for every render:

In some of them, yes. Others I might use Flink's sky. I do, however, almost always enclose my renders in something MUCH smaller than the Construct to get light bounces around my subjects.

As for the water, in almost all cases of water I use Vince Banga's or Ghostship's water shaders for Superfly. If I'm adding things like Flink's Water FX or those rings around the dabbling duck (an object freebie from ShareCG) I use Vince Banga's shader.

Poser 11/ Superfly adds area lights which function like mesh lights. You'll get soft shadows with area lights. It's hard to describe but I'd say that depending how you use them they can look more realistic than the other Poser lights.

@Ironsoul That is awesome! @knyghtmare2021 I'm probably the wrong guy to ask about optimization. I use two GTX cards and run settings that get me good results. How you light the scene is going to play a big roll in how many samples you need to render a shot. A skydome with a JPG for lighting will render cleaner than using an HDR but the lighting will be homogeneous. I'll try to render an example.

here are two examples with same settings but the only thing changed is the image used on the skydome. The JPG renders 30 seconds faster AND has less noise but the lighting is very homogeneous and bland whereas the HDR takes longer, and needs a lot more samples to become noise free but has more dramatic highlights and shadows. My personal opinion would be to avoid using Superfly or any PBR renderer for comic reproduction. Especially if your goal is to speed things up.

Glitterati3D posted Tue, 18 February 2020 at 7:32 PM

You're going to have to change the lighting in the one with the white floor. The light is shining right down onto the floor wiping out the gloss completely. You've got blowout because of the position of your light. The one on the right looks like she's trying to skate on wet gravel. The expression on her face is just weird.

wolfmanjim posted Tue, 18 February 2020 at 7:52 PM

I don't know. Where's it from? Change the diffuse map to get rid of the gravel. But you're going to be right back at the same place with blowout because of the light with a light color. Do you have a dome on the scene? Something smaller than the Construct?

Try lighting it with EZDome sIBL lights for EZDome here

hborre posted Tue, 18 February 2020 at 9:15 PM

We will need to take a look at the material room with all the nodes uncollapsed to make an assessment. As mentioned, your lighting could be too harsh for the scene. Lower light intensity and a dome might be the answer.

There are certainly renders where grain actually adds something and this is certainly one such render. It can add to the atmosphere or, in certain cases add some' dirt to a night or dirty scene.

OK, here are the material settings for the two skating renders. The no reflection one is on the left and the reflective one that has the ugl colors is to the right.

The presence of the bump map seems to make no difference.

I used the ice shaders in the Vincebanga Supperfly Shader set from the RM marketplace for them both. One is on the left and two is on the right.

I am no expert but I doubt much can be gathered from the screen captures you have shown, one help would be to expand the materials to see more details. To do this you would need to click click on the down arrow on the ice panel but posting this expanded material might just breach the usage agreement of the material.

I was uneasy with it but at least the screen captures so far show limited info. I was trying to find a balance between suggesting that what has been posted is not enough to rectify the problems but anything else would probably be too much. I have used the Vince Banga Superfly Shader sets for a year of more and they are great so I would not want to encourage anything that would impact their use and/or sales.

There is a great deal of information supplied with the sets and they encourage users to experiment but to do this you would need to be able to expand the compound node.

RedPhantom posted Wed, 19 February 2020 at 2:50 PM Online Now! Forum Moderator

For ice 2, if you look into the compound node, you'll see a colorramp and a noise texture. Those are what is causing the mottled look. To get rid of it completely, delete those and adjust the fac on the mix closure they were connected to so that the ice looks like how you want. If you don't mind a little mottle, adjust the colors so they are closer together. Darker colors make it more opaque, lighter more transparent.

A WIP for a project I'm trying to get finished, featuring a tomb and a lady who will need no introduction. The hair needs a movement morph and the jewellery needs a colour boost, as well as the poke thru at the shin.

Having to remove alt diffuse and alt specular I find a real pain

Great scene and nice lighting. Always hated that skirt, it was such a PITA to get right.

Great shot! You might try a wide screen aspect ratio with a large FOV setting and ad in DOF blur to make it feel larger.

it's pretty simple. I don't do any calculations just eyeball it with a couple of rules in mind. The larger the camera focal equals a larger (longer) camera lens in the real world. a smaller lens would be used to get up close and personal with your subject. The camera is physically closer, the focus area is smaller so use a smaller fstop number on the camera controls. just make sure it's large enough to not make the figure look miniature. In your shot here you want a large lens and have the camera set far away and use slightly larger fstop to widen out the area that's in focus otherwise the scene will look like a miniature again. Here is an example where I have the camera pretty close to the subject and the focal set smallish (probably around 50mm) and the fstop just enogh to get her into focus but blur out the back side of the pool prop. You can start off with increasing the number of pixel samples. The more pixels, the cleaner the render becomes. This will be at the expense of longer rendering.

@Hornet: Poser users like to show their work. What I mean by this is that they like to show off the background props when they've spent time setting them up. That's fine except it distracts from the main "focus" of the image. Focus is what you should be using in this image to separate the figure from the background. In Superfly it really doesn't add any render time to check the DOF box and set the camera focus. Even if this is just a background image or the back of the Envirosphere get into the habit of setting up your focus and rendering with DOF on.

I agree with ghostship2, using DoF selectively will add more interest and focus on the scene. The other thing that bothers me is the lack of life in the eyes, there are no highlights to spark interest. A small light source can bring out the sparkles.

Here is an example with a room prop. DOF set so the room is blurred. This image also shows off my other trick for getting life into the eyes. Turn the figure's head away from the camera and then point the eyes back at it so they are looking at you. BedroomSmall.jpg

Curious if anyone has thoughts to moving to 8K maps, we have been using 4K since 2006 at least. Below is an 8K interpolated from 4K miki textures,

image.png

ader posted Mon, 25 May 2020 at 1:33 PM

I've started using 8k maps for hair, not simple resizing though. So far I've just taken 4k maps into photoshop and quadrupled them so the details/hairs are finer. No issues with RAM so far, even my 6-year-old iMac has 32GB RAM.

What's your process for moving 4k to 8k? My other half is a graphic designer and she finds: http://waifu2x.udp.jp useful so I thought I'd try it, but it didn't seem to make any difference for me.

That eyebrow looks good btw... is that standard miki? texture or geometry or both...?

Maybe we should start a 4k versus 8k comparison thread?

ironsoul posted Mon, 25 May 2020 at 3:59 PM

8K texture map was generated in Substance Painter from a mixture of 4K base Miki textures and the texture.xyz demo mat that came with SP. I was surprised how much the jump in resolution improved the details, guess much of this is anti aliasing. I'll see if its possible to generate some native 8K textures and do another test.

NobbyC posted Fri, 29 May 2020 at 2:08 AM

The idea behind was, to create an better "gemm / diamond shader". On the beginning i played a lot with glass and refaction shaders. But at the end it was very simpel, i only need for the prisma a "glass shader" and for the rainbow effect i use "light path and transmision rays"

ghostship2 posted Sat, 06 June 2020 at 2:21 PM

For details that small when using an 8k map wouldn't it be helpful to also use uncompressed TIFF or PNG files? You can see the files compression artifacts in bump maps on reflective surfaces.

Hi ghostship2, sorry for my late reply. That is a really good question and i think that you are right.

The most figures with 8K textures that i found have PNG files for the texture maps but sometimes they use TIFF files for bump or normal maps.

But our problem in "Power world" is that these files are very huge and my graphic card won't like it (Only 6 GB ram -> cuda error).

For my render "back out of hell" i have to cheat a little bit. This model has a lot of polygones so i use for the upper torso the 8k textures and for the lower torso only the 2k textures.

ader posted Wed, 10 June 2020 at 9:41 AM

ghosthip2 is right, uncompressed image formats are better for rendering. They don't take more memory because even compressed images are uncompressed for use. The only benefit to compression is file-size on a hard-drive (and size to download if relevant). So use uncompressed where possible, especially for close-ups.
