A new character for an existing figure needs to be saved as a Support Asset only if you are using a custom morph (imported with Morph Loader or spawned from a dForm) or a new controller property driving multiple existing morphs (created with ERC Freeze or by dragging and dropping to the property hierarchy pane), or if you loaded a new UV layout. The first two would be saved as Morph Assets, the last as a UV layout. If you are using existing morphs and UV sets then just use file>Save As>Character preset.
