I've been trying to use Atmosphere settings to get a good depth and density to show better atmospheric perspective to my renders. Can anyone show some settings that can work? I've been tearing my hair out for two weeks now. Either the atmosphere doesn't show hardly at all or it's like the entire scene is in a fog. I am using Poser 11 and Superfly. And I prefer that for the other realistic lighting effects.

are you surrounding your scene with a giant cube or something and placing a volumetric shader on it? I don't understand how or what you are doing to get the atmospheric effect in the first place.

Thanks for the reminder, as that post is almost 5 years old, and for some reason I forgot to bookmark it. I'm going to do that now. 😉

Atmosphere can be done in Poser, but it does take some futzing around. I once wrote a quick tutorial on how to set up Atmospherics in Poser, but yeah, it's gonna come out looking mainly like fog or standing under a street lamp. I checked, but what I wrote has mainly disappeared. But NERD3D has some advice on his website. It is from Poser 5 though.

http://www.nerd3d.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=7

If you'd like, I'll go through my files again and see if I can find the missing pages on Poser Atmospherics. The thing is, most of what's missing actually comes from the Reference manual.

Here's what I used for Atmosphere settings with superfly. The distance may vary depending on how far your items are from the camera.

And I got this

For lights, I used one point light and ezdome in case it matters.

I've gotten the solid fog ... like in the last image. I was hoping to get a depth density. where it looks more dense as the perspective recedes. I have been testing the "add atmosphere" as suggested on fb. I'll let you know if this works.

to get it thicker as you get farther from the camera, reduce the volume step size. I have mine up high because I wanted a light fog.

I tried that ... cuz well it makes sense. But that didn't work. And the other fix just made the figures fuzzy, not foggy. I'll let you know how it works out. I'm not liking this image much any more. 😆

Do you mean something like in this picture Boni?

If so I made the fog with a box enveloping the scene with this material.

Here are some samples I did with varying volume density. They're kind of dark because I had the render settings low.

keep in mind these are far from the camera. How fast something disappears will be determined by that. The ball is 13ft from the camera, the cylinder is 48ft, the steps are 75 ft and the pyramid is 103ft each at the closest edge.

Poser's atmosphere effects don't work with Superfly which is why you have to use the cube.

As I first mentioned when I started writing about atmosphere effects in Poser, you can find all this in the reference manual. Look at the heading for Root Atmosphere Node on page 402 to show how to adjust the depth cue for light.

Take a peek at the post above yours. That was done with superfly. It may not work the same as with firefly, but as you can see, it does make fog.

All this sounds like a cue for someone to make a set of "fog props" and "fog planes" that are geared to working fast with SuperFly? There are at least three or four sets of those for Firefly, although often a bit low-res by today's standards, to get some ideas from.

The manual says that depth Cue (among other things) doesn't work with Superfly. If it's wrong, you should let whoever writes the manual know.

This uses a giant box and Raven's fog setup. Keep in mind that you also need to use an appropriate HDRI (overcast day) for the dome and the amb level needs to be cranked up.

I didn't say that the depth cue worked. I said that the atmosphere worked. The lower half of the function works.

Yes, basic SuperFly “volumetric effects when GPU enabled” were added in a late Smith Micro build of Poser 11. At that point they were likely not updating the Manual too quickly. I recall that that the new SuperFly atmospherics were not ideal in terms of speed or optimisation, but it was in there at last.

If you really want heavy atmosphere in a big scene, a Poser to Vue scene transfer is trivially easy. Either Poser 11 to Vue 2016 R5, or Poser 11 to the new subscription Vue.

That's definitely encouraging. I'll have to check out my HDRIs and see if I have anything appropriate to try.

Okay. the problem we're having is clearly one of semantics. Let's try this, SOME of Poser's atmosphere effects will not work with Superfly. In most cases, this seems to involve using a large cube to contain the area. I have an article about how to do that too some where.

Boni, here's an article on using and setting up Poser's Depth Cue in PP11.1. As far as I know, no, it is not in use with Superfly. Again, the manual says you can't use Depth Cue with Superfly.

a somewhat related question: Volume Scatter gets more dense with larger geometry. Is there a way for VS to work in reverse? More dense as the object gets smaller. Like the density would be more at the small end of a cone than the large end.

  Boni    ( ) ( posted at 1:55PM Tue, 06 October 2020  · @4401104

I'm wondering if a math function could take care of that. I was also thinking with a transparency map gradient oriented for density distance (along the z axis) or height (along the y axis) could be figured into the node tree. Now this is complex for me to figure out, but as an abstract idea to hand to a guru such as bagginsbill perhaps some interesting effects could be developed.

Here is a rough render to show what you guys have helped me with so far ...

Hey Boni, one of the CAs at HiveWire, Sparky, who worked on the HW Big Dog and Puppy, has some breeds on her own site, philosophersegg.com. I think she also now has a Wolf for the HW Big Dog.

I don't have them, but her work is well liked, so you might go take a look at what she has. You might find something you like. 😉

There's some really cool stuff at PhilosophersEgg. Those animals morphs for V4/M4 are amazing. I have not bought anything there yet, but I keep meaning to. The dog breeds look fantastic.

You're not the only one that thought Sparky and MrSparky were the same person. 😉

She also has some products in the HW store, though not the dog breeds. I think the animal morphs you mentioned are in her HW store as well, or at least the Reindeer for Dawn and Dusk, as well as a Cat for Dawn.

I think the animal morphs at her store are all for the DAZ Gen 4 figures. V4, M4, and K4. (I guess that's why they're not at Hivewire.) They really are amazing.

I saw the cat person at Hivewire. Almost bought it, but it's a little too toony for my taste. The humanimals at her store are more realistic.

I still use Mia, Little Dragon's Millennium Catwoman, sometimes. I like the old MilCat the best. The Hivewire cat poses nicely, but the head just doesn't look realistic to me. The ears are too big and rounded, and the head is too narrow.

  Miss B    ( ) ( posted at 7:56PM Wed, 07 October 2020  · @4401168

Yes, I thought the Cat person was a bit toony for my taste as well, as is the Reindeer for Dawn and Dusk. Nice ideas, but not the type of characters I would use.
