Subject: Tutorial PDF - How to Make Material Layer Presets in Poser 11

Lyrra ( ) posted Mon, 28 December 2015 at 6:00 PM · edited Tue, 26 March 2024 at 11:03 PM

I have written a basic tutorial for people wishing to material layer presets in Poser 11.

These are partial shaders that can be applied in a layer over an existing material in poser. This tutorial specifically is focused on making and saving a makeup layer for Pauline, but the concepts will work for any uvmapped figure.

This tutorial is for content creators.

A final note - since my last few posts have devolved into various persons harrassing me for who knows what reasons, there is every chance I will not follow or reply to this thread past my initial post. if you have questions you may need to contact me directly or catch me in the chatroom.

Thank you for your time and effort, it is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so MUCH! Just so you know .... layers only works in Superfly, someone noted that elsewhere.

Yes I know. I said so at the end of the tutorial :) I figured this feature was new and odd enough that people could use a guide on how to set these things up. It took me a few trial and errors to sort it out. :)

Hi Lyrra! Not sure why it doesn't work in Firefly, maybe they'll iron it out.

It might be the backward compatibility SM would like to maintain for Firefly rendering. Introduce layering at that level and you destroy vendors' ability to create content for earlier Poser versions.

Thank You, Lyrra! Happy New Year! 😃

I'm glad this thread is here. I didn't know it was only for Superfly. It saved me a lot of hair pulling and gnashing of teeth once I tried to set up another layer in Firefly. Thanks.

Reviving this old thread. I followed the tutorial to make Guyliner for L'Homme. That worked fine. So then I clicked on his lips and did the same function but this time I wanted to make a pale lip for him, this didn't work. Simple set up of what was discussed in the PDF! Any help with this?

If it doesn't work in Firefly, how do those scripts that layer textures work? There are some in the RMP that make second skin clothing. There's one at DAZ that lets you put scars, wounds, cuts, and bruises on any texture.

I wish there were more of those. There are some characters that are dirty, bloody, etc. but not many that you can apply to any character texture.

I'm working in the layers area of the Material Room in Poser 11. That way I don't make my folder of textures HUGE when I put the character in the marketplace. I wanted to layer on simple bits like "guyliners" and lip stains as some goth guys do. Not sure if it's a bug in Poser 11 or what but I can get the eyeliner to work but the lips do not!

Firefly or superfly render? The Layers function in the material room only works/renders with the superfly engine. For firefly you would need to do a, (I believe, been a while since I've done it), color math/ multiply with your base texture and the lip to add a lip layer.

Consider me insane if you wish, but is your reality any better?

RAMWorks ( ) posted Fri, 02 October 2020 at 4:52 PM

I'd love an all in one solution but mostly it's for Superfly. If there is a way to set it up for BOTH then I'll scrap the layers thing and go with that. So if you find that tutorial bwldrd please post it here.
Thanks so much Richard

Overlays are possible in Firefly, because the old Rust-Icator for Poser and Grime-Inizer for Poser did it quite easily (and can still do it in Poser 11).

Well bought the bundle but with their download links being removed from the customers Product Library I have no way to access it' Not showing up in either of their download managers so I'm STUCK until tomorrow where hopefully they will have a reply to my ticket I submitted.

So is there a quick and dirty way to achieve this need using Fire AND Superfly that I can try today?

Tried out the Rust one, didn't do ANYTHING. Not sure what I did wrong. Tried it both directly through Load Python and through the Pose> Hybrid Grunge folder which of course brings up the Python script dialog. Nada!

So does that mean you managed to download it?

I have several of the overlay scripts made by these vendors. They were written for older versions of Poser, but still work. However, because they are written for older versions of Poser, they might not work, or might not work as expected, if you're using SSS shaders.

Maybe try them with a very basic texture, just to see if that works?

RAMWorks ( ) posted Sun, 04 October 2020 at 6:08 PM

OK. I do have SSS set up with my character I'm developing!

If the product doesn't meet your needs because it doesn't work with SSS shaders...remember DAZ has a money back guarantee.

RAMWorks ( ) posted Sun, 04 October 2020 at 9:36 PM

I did discover one thing that MAY work. The Blend node, plug in your diffuse map in the upper slot, plug in the 'Pale lips" map in the lower slot and then I can change the lips from dark to light to bright and bouncy to dull and really gray. So that MAY work!
