enable shadows in render settings, use firefly (not preview) renderer, enable shadows on all lites, all objs shadow-casting et al.

Ah - shadow blur radius (2.4) is way too big. The sun's blur radius is .5 - no more and no less. (it's 1/2 of a degree)

The shadow strength is not 1 - it should be 1.

ok changing that now and trying it

Here's a scene I made - it's in my dropbox for you (temporarily).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/szz3q2l9vt5nyq9/ShadowScreen.pz3?dl=0

It's really simple and looks like this.

If it looks like this for you, too, then you should study it to find what you're doing differently.

It uses no maps so all you need is the scene file.

Renderosity forum reply notifications have been wonky in the past. I'm testing the waters to see if it's working now. If you ask me something and I don't come back, it probably isn't. (Updated January 17, 2017)

Shadow blur radius for the sun, 0.5... for interior studio spot lighting is there a general standard like this?

NPR rendering style mostly, interested in soft shadow.

Also, DarkElegance, pixel samples 10 seems unnecessarily high... 7 or 8 is the most high quality settings that I've seen.

Great! For the benefit of future readers who may be referred to this thread for the same problem, can you tell us what you found that was wrong?

I -love- the shadow I get with the lights now. The shadows under her hands..the shadows from the leaves....lovely. Now I can continue building the scene! I may be back for more advice ^.^

My HDR light wasnt right, it was washing my shadows out, My "sun" didnt have the right  shadow sample. I didnt have the point light, My third light was a specular light(an infinite light). It didnt add anything really to the scene.....?

Went to the gallery to see the image ... your last image was uploaded in 2009 ... Was wondering if you could share the image you've been working on with the leaf shadows.  Curious minds want to see. :)

Still working it :P

I decided the hair had to go. I am adding waterline plants. And now I am unhappy with the water....This is the longest I have -ever- worked on an image. this has been going now for two weeks. My work I usually post now in DA...but most is in storage. Ill link when the image is done!

Commented at DA, it's better than you think.  I really love it.  Looks like the koi texture and the leaf shadows worked out for you. :)
