know that paint shop pro is old softwaree ....Is anyone still using it on the newer computers ...windows after xp?

the only image apps that are around are gimp and expensive Photo shop at least that ever talked about.

I don't know why you say it's old software.  They just came out with version X7, maybe a month ago.  And you would hear more about PSP if you would stop hanging out in the Photoshop areas.  I still use it.

I still use it too. I use PSP X6 on Windows 8.1.  I never could get used to Photoshop, and I pretty much can't live without my PSP.

Not a day is passing without I am using my beloved PSP9.

I do have PSPX3, but I hated the browser system and the pale tool icons, so I went back to my good old PSP9. Havent checked out the latest versions.

I use Photoshop mostly, but just reinstalled my latest version, PSP 8, on a Win 7 64 bit computer, in order to work in Animation Shop 3 (which came with PSP 8).

Asked about image software and the only programs offered by users was "Gimp" and most were "Photoshop" fans . The reviews on the  newest release seem to limited just to cropping and formatting to facebook or photobukets or email.

Want to go back to an early Paint shop pro for effects and tools taht seem to be missing from the new versions.

Should have asked if  Jasc "PSP 8" can be run on wi 7 without problems

Last time i check this forum it seemed nearly dead as no one was talking about anything so went to the only other image forum around which is photoshop fans

I haven't tried to do too much with it but it seems fine.  Yes, loved JASC, had all the versions through 8...wasn't happy when the company was bought and haven't upgraded since then.

I use most of my plugins that I used with version 7 &8, and I have version X6.  It's more of a matter of being able to download those old plugins if you don't already have them stored somewhere.  Many of those sites are closing.  But I have no lack of plugins that I can use in X6.  And I do more than just image cropping.  It's just a matter of what you want to use PSP for.  Find you a good sig tag tutorial, and PSP will do it, just as well as Photoshop.  Or use PSP to do photograph editing.  Your choice.  And if you're more comfortable with 8, then use it.  I know my PSP 9 works fine on my Win7.

It was definately better under Jasc.  Corel has been pushing the photo fix aspects of the program over painting but the tools are still there.

I am still using PSP version X2 in my case.  I use it a lot for postwork but also working on skin textures, blending different textures and adding tattoos and sometimes make up.

It is also used for preparing Photo Books that I have had published and preparing renders for uploading to the gallery here.

Out of 3D I still use to for photography as well and love the fact I can use 'Raw' format from my Olympus E1.

Never likes Photoshop or seen the need to spend so much on software.  PSP does all I need.

Ok folks rereading my first question ---Should have ask it this way.

Is any one still using the early jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 on the newer windows system from OSVer. 7 and up.

The newer paint shop from corel seems to be centered around correcting or changing photos.  Didnt see the drawing / paint tools .

Wanted to do more than that. the old psp 8 had drawing tools and some other tools and effects that came with that version.   Gimp is fine for basic editing unless plug-ins for effect or or drawing are hidden some where.  Photoshop has newer tool that have been added for modeling and printing but have to consider the cost of this program.

jestmart ( ) posted Sun, 19 October 2014 at 11:39 AM

I told you the tools are still there.  Corel is just adjusting the marketing to hook all those people taking crappy pictures with their cell phones.

I think that Vampwaire wants to know if Jasc versions will actually work on Windows 7.  I have Jasc version 7 installed so that I can use the plugins  so I just tried it on my Windows 7 system.  It works fine.

I use Version X1 (11) but also own version X4.  I don't care for the browsing system in version 14 so I continue to use version 11.

hornet3d ( ) posted Tue, 21 October 2014 at 4:38 AM

Took the plunge and purchased X7 after using X2 for a number of years.

Going 64bit seems to give the biggest change as the brushes are so much faster.  Tools like the magic wand and the background eraser seem to be a little better and again, are so much faster.

Still playing with the rest of it but the improvements I have found so far are worth the cost of purchase.

Some older plugins - Axion Glow & sparkle for example - will not work on Windows 8 systems, the code is too old.  I've run PSP5 up to PSP9, which I still use constantly.  I had some conflicts with Aero on my Win 7 laptop, but it runs fine on Win8.  I just had to find other (newer) plugins to replace whichever older ones will not work, or transfer the .psp file to the laptop to use those plugins.

Hi Vampwaire, I still use Jasc Paint shop Pro 8, version 8.10 on my Windows 7 64 bit. It works great.  The only problem I have come across is that the crop tool can sometimes crash the program. It is not every time but once in a while. Hope this helps.

In many ways I feel GIMP is the better all round image manipulation and paint program than Corel's recent PSP versions.  GIMP options and workflow is just geared more for advance users where as Corel is going in the direction of 'user' friendliness' geared more for the average computer user.  The only reason I continue to use PSP is I hate GIMP's free floating work windows/palettes.

I've been a PSP user since V.1 (ca. 1993, shareware!) and now have X5 X6 X7 on a Win 8.1 machine   -  (some things I still use X5 for,- personal choice).  It's my go-to image manipulator.  Through the years, my main use has been texturing 3D models for Flight Simulator, but more and more, it's post-rendering from Daz3d.

PSP 8.10 works great in win 7 64 bit.Crop tool will crash program if it is a large image.A quik save of the image and reopen then it won't crash vast majority of the time.

"Reinstall Windows" is NOT a troubleshooting step.

I use PSP from the beginning.

Every day, edit, but also painting, photo books. all the filters are made for Photoshop work very well.

Now I have PSPX2, later versions do not give much extras beyond all that wifi and facebook hassle. Animation Shop I installed separately from PSP 8

and everything works fine with W8.1 64 bit

PSP 9.01 FTW in Windows 7 x64.  You work with a tool for years, and it does the job you want it to... you get loathe to abandon it.

Tried on of the later X3 or X4 or whatever, couldn't stand it.

I used Paintshop Pro 9 since 2003 until last year, 2014. Only reason I decided to upgrade to Paintshop Pro X7 was that I needed support of my new computer with 64bits, and the huge RAM. But I installed also my old Paintshop Pro 9, which works finr with Windows 8.1 and 64bits (not supporting all processor cores though).

I use Paintshop in combination with a WACOM tablet and also FilterForge 4. Furthermore I have a huge collection of brushes purchased from Ron (Deviney), they all work very well.

I would never EVER pay that amount of money which people ask for a Photoshop license, which can even be time limited on top! I think the pricing for Photoshop is almost criminal, and their attitude alone is enough for me to avoid Photoshop. Paintshop does the job just as well.

Hello, Late to this post (and all the others), I have used Paint Shop Pro since Windows 95. That would be version 6 in my case. I stuck at PSP 9 cause frankly, it had all that I needed from a quick editor. Though I also use PS, most of my work seems to revolve around PSP. What that says about my work, I don't know. With Windows 7 (Ultimate 32) I have only noticed that PSP 9 automatically drops the Aero environment (transparency and shiny bits) then resets all when closed. If I use a standard (non-Aero) color scheme, I notice nothing. Oddly, Animation Shop 3.11, included with PSP9 doesn't seem to have the Aero problem. I see that Corel is up to version X7 and Wiki notes that it is not compatible with Windows 10 (yet, I suppose), but I won't switch from Windows 7 until I absolutely (read: never) have to. PSP 9 forever !

rsand55 ( ) posted Wed, 09 September 2015 at 8:41 AM

I too like to stick with app versions that still that still work well for me. I have been with PSP 7 since receiving it. I will however, upgrade to Windows 10 as I was a beta tester and it seemed (even in that buggy state) to perform like Win 8.1 which I have and use on one of my PC's. I am concerned that the older programs might be a problem though.

What do you mean with glo text? Glowing text?

Maybe using the shadow tool could help to achieve this. Another possibility that came in my mind is to duplicate the layer that contains the text (text background color black, foreground color white) and use the unsharpen tool (Gaußscher ... (i am german so i do not know how it spells in englisch); Radius 10 or higher. Change the background color to white and the foreground color to black. Create a new layer and write the same text again.

For glowing text, I assume you mean an outline that fades off. I usually use Eye Candy 4000's gradient glow from alien skin. It looks like it's now part of Eye Candy 7 which is $129. You're probably looking for a free method.

Gaußscher would be Gaussian according to google. And this should work. I have x5 but I don't think these function have changed. Have the text on it's own transparent layer. Duplicate it. Move that under the other layer. If you want the glow a different color, change the color of the text on the new layer. Use Gaussian blur to the desired with of the glow. Don't worry about it being too transparent to fix that repeatedly duplicate the glow layer until it is your desired opacity then merge all the glow layers.

the top is the Gaussian the bottom is Eye Candy.

One interesting thing that I can see is that the .exe and a lot of other application files were compiled/created on 16 August 2004. Can it be that JASC built in a 12 year self-destruct function???

Vertical in one place and later it is horizontal. I am just not sure, if it is a PSP9 or window10 problem. Never had the problem in Win7. My PSP X3 is still collecting dust somewhere.

Hmmm, I can't believe I've never responded in this thread.

In any case, I think I started with PSP 5, and then upgraded to PSP 6, PSP 7, PSP 8, and finally PSP 9. PSP 7 was my favorite, and I still have it installed, but I've also been using Photoshop since PS 7, though never upgraded past CS2, and I use PS more frequently. I prefer using PSP 7 for quick screenshots and such, but for compositing my 3D renders and such, I prefer to use Photoshop.
