Subject: "Poser 8/9 has stopped working" after IE10 Win7 64bit update?

3dcheapskate ( ) posted Tue, 15 October 2013 at 10:14 PM · edited Tue, 26 March 2024 at 5:40 AM

I'm not 100% sure that there's a cause/effect relationship here, but from the checks I've done over the past couple of days it looks likely.

But if there is a causal relationship I'd expect many, many people to have the same problem, especially since so many people have just grabbed Poser 9.

So is anybody else getting this?

More details if anybody's interested...

Initial symptoms:

Around midday on Monday 14th (two days ago) Poser 8 and Poser 9 suddenly stopped working. I start them up, the UI frame displays, but before the full UI is displayed I get that not-too-helpful " has stopped working" message.

No problem with Poser 6 though - that still works fine.

I also get the same error if I try to open McAfee Security Centre (although the real-time scanning seems okay). I haven't noticed it with any other programs (although I probably haven't run any others).

In Safe Mode I could open McAfee Security Centre and run a scan with no problem (didn't try running Poser)

Attempts to work out what's causing it:

I uninstalled Poser 8/9 and reinstalled Poser 9. Same problem.

I did a basic check of my system (Dell Inspiron 15R) - Dell Diagnostics (everything passes), chkdsk c: /r (no problems), full virus scan (McAfee Security Centre - no issues detected).

I looked at eventvwr and found the logged events (level=error, source=application, eventID=1000, taskCategory=(100)) which from what I've read possibly indicate DEP (Data Execution Prevention). The stuff I've read about getting round DEP doesn't make sense, so I did nothing.

I then used System Restore to revert to a Restore Point just prior to the first occurance. Problem gone - Poser 9 and McAfee Security Centre run fine.

On shutdown Windows Update ran again... and on rebvoot the problems back. Checked to see what was in the update - four items including "Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems". Uninstalled Windows 10 - problem gone.

Conclusion:

Which leads me to conclude that something in the IE10 Win7 64bit update doesn't like Poser 8/9 and McAfee Security Centre (or vice versa). But then, as I said, I'd expect loads and loads of people to have the same problem. And it could be other stuff I was doing about the same time (uninstalling/reinstalling all DAZ stuff, including DSON importer, creating an Ubuntu 12.04 bootable USB, etc - but that's unlikely given the final check i did)

(My system: Dell Inspiron 15R with Windows 7 Home Premium)

64bit Windows, running both Poser 8 and 9, ran updates IE 10, no issues as of yet.  I ran into the DEP problem before and fixed it, but it effected other programs.

IE 10 lives up to its nickname of Exploder.  It didn't cause trouble with Poser for me, but it did make my mouse wheel stop working, so I fell back to IE 9.

Thanks for the feedback. With roughly 100 views of these two threads (this and the DAZ3D one) nobody else seems to have the same problem. Makes it look like a particular combination of things peculiar to my system.

Reverting to IE9 (I'm a Firefox user, and very rarely touch IE) seemed to stop the problem for me, so I'm okay for now.

I've also reinstalled Poser 8 and 9 (with all relevant updates) - make sure I've got a clean Poser installation.

I've also deleted the old user account on my PC and created a new one, as I've found that this often resolves strange problems.

Also ran a Trend Micro Housecall virus scan just to double check - seems clean. Should probably do a SpyBot S+D scan and a MalwareBytes scan as a triple-check.

And I've had this laptop for a couple of years now without doing a single complete system reinstall (which I used to do once, maybe twice, a year on my old system). I don't really fancy doing that at the moment, but it's always an option if I run into any more odd problems.

Quote - 64bit Windows, running both Poser 8 and 9, ran updates IE 10, no issues as of yet.  I ran into the DEP problem before and fixed it, but it effected other programs.

The 'fix' I'd seen for DEP-caused "program has stopped working" issues was to switch DEP off for the affected programs. I was a bit dubious about this as I have no idea how knowledgeable/reliable the author was, and I can't find the advice now...

IE11 just sneaked its way onto my system yesterday, and after a month with no problems Poser 8 and Poser 9 have stopped working today. Coincidence?! Again!?

I've done a bit more investigation this time (posted over on the DAZ thread - see the 2nd post on this thread for the link). I'll just note my new conclusions here:

a) It seems to be a combination of IE10/11, having your default Poser 8/9 default content installed in an external runtime, and possibly other factors.

b) There seem to be two distinct symptoms, both seeming to result from the factors in (a) above.

  • The first is the "Poser 8/9 has stopped working" message.
  • The second is that Poser 8/9 is working (you can move the camera and render) but the library pane remains blank and the busy cursor appears when you mouse over it.

c) I got rid of the "Poser 9 has stopped working" issue with IE11 by manually editing my C:Users{account}AppDataRoamingPoser9 LibraryPrefs.xml file to remove the external runtime with the default Poser 9 content. I was left with the blank library pane issue.

Any thoughts, suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Adobe Flash would be high on the list of suspects (think it accounts for most Poser crashed posts on this forum).

3dcheapskate ( ) posted Thu, 21 November 2013 at 5:31 AM · edited Thu, 21 November 2013 at 5:43 AM

'Control Panel > Flash Player (32 bit)' tells me that the version is exactly the same when Poser 8/9 is working and when I get the problem, so if the issue is Adobe Flash related it's clearly more than just a matter of version number - I read somewhere that IE10/11 are more closely linked with Flash than IE9 was, so I suspect that IE10/11 tinkers with Flash...

A couple of hours ago I did a system restore to the point before IE11 was installed (the update was just IE11). I then had Adobe Flash 11.9.900.117 (both plug-in and ActiveX) and IE9 (I think- I didn't actually check!) - Poser 8/9 working fine, as before.

When I turned off my computer Windows Update malevolently forced* IE11 back on me. So after reboot I've still got Adobe Flash 11.9.900.117 (both plug-in and ActiveX) but now IE11.00.9600.16428 (both 32 and 64 bit) - Poser 8/9 have the blank library pane problem again

I updated Adobe Flash to the latest 11.9.900.152 (both plug-in and ActiveX) - no change, Poser 8/9 have the blank library pane problem.

There's at least one other person (over on the DAZ thread) who's come across a very similar IE 10/11 problem, but it's obviously only affecting the selected few...

*I still haven't found any way to refuse an update - in my administrator account I deselect it, but when I go to shut down that little yellow shield is back on the 'Shut Down' button.

Found a few more threads when I added 'Flash' to my Google search terms (listed on the DAZ thread)

But I've just noticed that opening the ‘Content’ tab in Poser 8/9 causes a “Poser 8/9 has stopped working” crash…

Attached Link: Recent post on Flash problem

Are there other apps running when you get the "not responding" message. This includes web browsers, email etc. If so next time you get a "not responding" message try exiting every other running app to see if it clears the problem (This is the problem I had with Poser 8 and Chrome a few years back).

3dcheapskate ( ) posted Thu, 21 November 2013 at 7:56 AM

The  “Poser 8/9 has stopped working” message (actually "Poser executable file has stopped working") appears even when Poser 8/9 is the only app running and I open the Content tab. But it only appears if I'm connected to the internet. If I'm physically unplugged then the content pane remains blank with the busy cursor.

The blank library pane occurs regardless of whether I'm connected - symptoms seem the same as SAMS3Ds in your link. I can't try the 'use a different LSMGUI.swf' solution as P6/8/9 is all I have. And disconnecting/reconnecting the internet doesn't seem to resolve it.

For what it's worth, I'm having the same issue.  As you said ever since the IE upgrade to 11 and I can't get back to IE 10.

Like yourself, I'm eager to find the solution.

Anyone else?

anim8ter ( ) posted Thu, 21 November 2013 at 5:32 PM

I've discovered a temporary workaround the blank library issue.  Under preferences, change the library launch behavior to foreground instead of embedded.

Not ideal, but at least the library becomes accessible.

Over on the DAZ thread WandW posted an MS link saying how to prevent automatic installation of IE 11 - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40722

I'll try the 'library behaviour' change you suggest when I get back on my own system

Changed Library to floating instead of docked...same issue.

Have you installed the new service release?

I am wondering if it fixed this problem (which, I'm pretty sure, is caused by compatibility problems with IE).

FIXED!

I downgraded back to IE10, and all is working now

Procedure: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-uninstall-internet-explorer-11-ie11-in-windows-7/

...and I did need to reboot for it to take effect.

Just checked - but that option doesn't seem to be present in Poser 8/9 ('Edit > General Preferences > Library' I assume?)

When I used 'Control Panel > Programs + Features > View Installed Updates'  and uninstalled 'Internet Explorer 11' it completely uninstalled IE (ie it didn't revert to IE10/9 - iexplore.exe and most of the DLLs were removed from 'C:Program FilesInternet Explorer' and 'C:Program Files (x86)Internet Explorer'). I ended up using System Restore to get back to where I was before the IE11 incursion, but as I said before WU then forced IE11 back onto to mystem. But there is that MS IE11-install-blocker...

P.S. Reverting back to IE9/10 isn't really a fix, more a nifty side-step to avoid the issue!

FF user here too. IE10 caused this problem for me a month ago, and I got round it by reverting to IE9. But a month later here I am again, this time with IE11.

Reverting to IE9 (10?) works, but I'm really hoping to understand the "why" this time.

Notice in general Windows forums that people with problems with IE11 freezing are disabling shockwave to get IE working. I'm not suggesting you reinstall IE11 but if someone who is reading this thread has the same problem it would be interesting to know if it has any impact. Instructions are (quoted from the forum)

You can disable it by clicking the gear icon (top right hand corner) then clicking "manage add ons" click on "shockwave flash object" and select "disable".

The other thought is, what is your current default browser. If its IE then could changing the default to another help (not suggesting this is a valid fix but if someone tries it and it works its another option people have).

3dcheapskate ( ) posted Fri, 22 November 2013 at 10:02 AM

I've still got IE11 installed, and I'm going to give it another day or so and try a few things before reverting to IE9/10 (Luckily I've also got Poser 6 which is unaffected by this problem, so I'm not totally Poserless!)

Just to be clear - I now have two separate problems when IE11 is installed:

  1. Blank library pane in Poser 8/9
  2. "Poser executable has stopped working" when I open the Content tab in Poser 8/9

Here's a summary of a few things I've tried:

  • I have the latest Poser updates installed (8.0.3.11793 and 9.0.3.23027).
  • I have the latest version of Flash (11.9.900.152) booth plug-in and Active-X
  • Disconnecting from the internet before running Poser 8/9 stops problem (2) - I just get a blank content pane with a busy cursor, but has no effect on the blank library pane.
  • Just tried disabling Flash from within IE11 as ironsoul suggested - no difference.
  • FF is my default browser, so to try ironsoul's other thought I made IE my default browser (and had the same issues with Poser 8/9), and then made FF my default browser again - same issues still.

Here's a couple I'm unable to try:
- anim8ter found that "Under preferences, change the library launch behavior to foreground instead of embedded." gets round the blank library problem. But that option isn't available on Poser 8/9 - I'm not sure what Poser version anim8ter was using?

  • WandW found that using the PP2012 version of 'LSMGUI.swf' in place of the Poser 9 one resolved a similar problem back in September (and SAMS3D found that the Poser 10 version worked too). I haven't got Poser 10 or PP2012 so I can't try those. (That info was from the link in a previous post on this thread by ironsoul)

Installed the IE11 update

Have pp2012 but use external library option normally so look ok at first startup. Changed config to use embedded and got the blank library pane.

Uninstall Flash. Was expecting the "please install flash" page but still got the blank library pane.

Checked Event Viewer for errors but none displayed. If the problem was due to security settings added by IE11 preventing the ActiveX plugin from loading I would have expected to see something.

Compared output of ProcessMonitor with running Poser before and after IE update and references to "shockwave-flash" that appeared in pre upgrade list do not show up in post upgrade monitor.

At this point starting to think Flash is not the problem since the application is not getting that far

Checked running Poser image using ProcessExplorer and can see thread stack reference to mshtml (which was updated as part of IE11). mshtml is used to provide web browsing functionality to applications. Don't know how Poser uses mshtml so may or may not be relevent to problem but does show that upgrade to IE11 includes more than just the IE app.

Do we know if anyone has posted the question about P8/P9 to SM tech support?

Even though my default browser is FF, once I was able to revert back to IE 10 all my Poser issues were solved.  BTW, I'm using PoserPro2012.

Just had a post on the DAZ thread here http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/30633/P15/#487218 somebody else just ran into this problem and contacted SM. They are apparently working on a fix for Poser 9/2012 - rolling back to IE10 is apparently the recommended interim workaround.

Hello!

I Just want to add my experience with this. You are not alone with this problem. I am on a Win7 64bit system. I have two computers with poser one Intel I5, and my render computer with a Intel 3930 six core processor.

I ran into exactly this problem with my PP2014. When it happend, I tried to reboot again and got the same problem. After a Virus search (found nothing), I made a backup of my whole system.

The computer was very unstable at this time, so i had to work in fail safe mode. Unfortunately i didnt check any of the poser forums after solutions. I have wanted to change my SSD drive to a bigger one for quit some time, so i did, and reinstalled windows on this and installed poser. BOOM! Poser gone, screen blank.

This was when i realised that it might have been IE11 that caused it. So i tried the system restore to get back befor the update. That failed, and windows wouldnt start again.

I reinstalled Windows again, and this time made sure, IE11 was not int the updates. Installed PP2014 BOOM! Same thing again. Made a virus search again, found nothing. Installed my older PP2012, same thing with that.

I am running out of ideas at the moment. But i will try to reinstall windows and try to install PP2014 With no updades what so ever. But not today, after the last couple of weeks i want a day off with this.

The funny (or not) is that Poser 2012 works on my older Intel I5 computer with IE10 installed.

Have a nice day!!

randym77 ( ) posted Wed, 27 November 2013 at 8:23 PM

It sounds like SM is going to release a fix for this soon.  For Poser 9, anyway. Poser 8 users might be out of luck.

VolcanicMink ( ) posted Wed, 27 November 2013 at 11:20 PM

Does that mean a fix for P9 and up? Don't know if this affected the newest versions, but PP12 was knocked out cold.

The link to downgrade IE was helpful. PP12 is loading fine now, and the library is fixed. Many thanks for that!!

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 28 November 2013 at 12:15 AM

From what it says in other threads...the fix for Poser 9 is already up.

The fix for Poser 10 is coming soon.  They are packaging it with the already-scheduled content updater.  Teyon said they're hoping for early December.

The Poser 9 Win SR3.2 fix is released -  http://poser.smithmicro.com/poser9-updates.html - a note on that page says that "Poser 9 Win SR3.2 provides support for Windows users who are running Internet Explorer 11"

(I haven't tried it yet - I'm happy enough with my IE11-blocker for now!)*

According to this post there should be a PoserPro2012 hotfix in the works too.

Poser 8 users are out of luck - it's just too darn old now!

*I didn't think that Poser 10 wasn't affected by the problem (but I might be wrong)? Neither was Poser 7 (I think?). Poser 6 was definitely fine even with IE11 installed.

*Not sure about PoserPro 2010?
