The only one that I know of is Deep Exploration, but it requires you to have an activated copy of 3dsMax on your computer in order to work.

As wheatpenny indicates, 3dsmax is a proprietary file format, and only works in a licensed version of 3dsmax. †It can not be opened or used by any other applications. †In the future, Autodesk, which owns Maya and XSI as well, may allow those programs to be cross-compatible with the max file format, and vice-versa, so that all applications with proper authentication could open each other's files natively, but that's about it,.

Also - because the .max file is a scene description file, there wouldn't be a lot of point in opening it in anything else :)

If the other program could read that information, and translate the scene into native lights, objects, modifiers, cameras, etc., then that would be incredibly useful. †Someone could create an entire scene in 3dsmax, and then send it to say someone using Modo or Maya to continue working on, then off to some stand-alone render engine, for instance, †that could also read all the cameras, lights, etc. †It would make for a totally fluid and flexible pipeline that was application "independant" for the most part.

Maya already has a "Send to 3ds Max" feature. Now they need to add a "send to Maya" feature for Max.

Nice. †Yeah, the same for Revit. †I think Revit can translate scenes both ways to 3dsmax 2013, or maybe just one way, not sure.

No you really need max i would download the demo verison of it and then export it to the file extention you need whether that's OBJ .3ds Ai etc. if you don't have the right extention then you won't be able to open the file.

you could throw the file up on and see if some of the other can export it as i am using max 9 i won't able to do it

The fbx format provides the cross platform compatabilty you want.

+1

As far as exporting meshes are concerned the "export" option in Max will do just about anything too. Perfect for Poser stuff and others.

I have always thought†Deep Exploration is the only one.

Yeah, for the most part FBX is a great solution. †However, I don't believe it can maintain things like procedurals (unless you bake them), for example, and there can be other issues. †Also, a lot of apps don't support FBX either, without a plugin. †Native support/translation of a file format would still be more desireable in some ways. †Kind of like how some render engines have custom translation bridge plugins made for them that attempt to translate everything in the scene 1 to 1, including things like procedurals, etc.
