I'm sorry but I will never post unfinished work in the gallery. My images are not that large .... will be displayed well on a standard 1280x1024 res Monitor.

I have finished the Pod / hatch or whatever it was called :)

Hi,

at the beginning I'm doing some research for the exact messuremants of the model. Sometimes there are "blueprints" or shematics that I can use. These I put together in Photoshop and there I make my messurements. So to say its my digital drafting table to get my base mesh.

After that I'm modeling "on the fly" ... only with tricky parts I'm trying to messure them in Photoshop.

Do you keep a big library of greebles or make these 'to order' for the model?

hi,

I don't have a library for greebles. I'm modeling all the existing details of the model as accurate as possible.

here are some examples:

www.modelermagic.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/kg_m-falcon_-010.jpg

www.modelermagic.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/kg_m-falcon_-116.jpg

All parts are Kitbashed by ILM so they are using one part more then one time. I think I will start making a little greeble library. Its interesting, the falcon is made from Tanks and Cars LOL

I hope to have some more to show soon

Chris :)

While he said "Monitor" I'm pretty sure he meant just for the forum. Your images are so large the break the CSS formating for reading the forums. The WYSIWYG editor does allow you to resize how your images display for the forums. Either of the forum Mod's could resize them for you just using the forum editor and it won't affect the image sizes for downloads. I've just used it here:

Looking down at 40, these plates look particulaly evil all in different direction, non-planar looking. Were they very hard, cause the look brutal to me. Top notch, and just incredible work!!

People like this make me sick. How can they be allowed to post such blatant pornography like this on a family based site such as Renderosity. I mean, kids could see this and scar them mentaly for the rest of their lives.

Awesome work. I wouldnt even know where to begin with something like this, but I love these posts where we get to see the model evolving over time. Thanks for sharing your work with us ;)

MarkHirst ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2010 at 7:25 AM

I'm just working through some C4D modelling tutorials at the moment, but having a tutorial on how these models where made would be gold dust.

Like toads says, where do you start with something like this !

I can make some making ofs for this model and maybe I'll make some tutorials :) OK I'll do some but it will take a bit ...

Where do I start? Collecting all availabe reference material you can get (over 2 years for the falcon). Most of the work is to find pics or shematics for the model you want to make. Then you need to analyze the material, make mesurements in PS and so on. After that I do a low poly model on what I start working on with all the details ... I always try to be as accurate as possible :)

Next post will be an update and after that I will make a 'lil tutorial :)

Thank you!

I am interested in some of the modelling strategies / thought process involved. You see a particular shape or detail on the reference photo; what kind of technique best tackles one kind of detail, what tool helps deal with another.

The thing that makes these pictures so impressive to me is it's not clear how they were achieved, even when I am familiar with the raw functionality of the tools involved.

Chris ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2010 at 3:09 PM

you will laugh but mostly I started with primitives like cylinder or quads to make details. Most parts of the Falcon are made of this primitives. There is a lot of boolean too.

I will show an easy example how I made that armour plates ... and you will see how easy it is ;)

The poly count is at 720K atm ... but the mesh is dirty so I think it will be 500 - 600 clean.
