**   ** ALL ABOUT  LIGHT PROBES:

Some information on Light Probes. What they are, how do they work, where to get them, how to make them and ways to use them.

Explanation on what a light probe is and how it works

First thing you need to do is download the free  HDR Shop v1

Next read the tutorials they have there on how to use it. It's pretty straight forward but you will need to read the tutorials on how to get started with it.

Here is a better tutorial on using HDR Shop

Here are some  images

You will need the HDR Shop to convert those to .jpg images for use inside Poser.

You can also make your own from normal images but you need multiple images in order to do that. You can see what I mean by going to this link and scrolling down to the cross format images.

What I do is find HDR ready images that I can turn into a sphere using HDR Shop.  Here are some links:

http://gl.ict.usc.edu/Data/HighResProbes/    Download the HDR ones

http://hdri.3dweave.com/library/

Last year I managed to find some other links as well by searching google for things like IBL images, HDR Images, and Light Probe Images.  I can't readily see them in google right now: it's possible that the sites are gone or that I'm just not dealving deep enough into the search.  But those links above should be more than enough for your uses.

You might want to check out these 2 links at RDNA. Our very creative bagginsbill has a great technique for a new way to use light probes!  And he was kind enough to write up a tutorial on how he accomplished it.  The best thing is that it only uses ONE light!!!

Not your average IBL image (see tutorial just below)

Is there any chance this thread could be stickied? I can't count the number of times I've gone to the shader thread, and lighting is just as important. I didn't even know this thread was here.

And big thanks to you Acadia for putting it all together :)

Not really sure where to put this one, so I'll put it under "lighting" since that is the end result

just seconding greeb - can the mods make this one a sticky? some info is largely for pre-poser 8, but I couldn't find this thread earlier, and even the basic poser directional lites can be confusing to new users.

Acadia, many of the older links - particularly the ones which reference to RDNA are no longer available.

Acadia ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2010 at 7:45 PM

Unfortunately RDNA changed servers and when they did, all of their links broke.

In order to view the RDNA threads, until I feel up to updating this thread further, simply click on the RDNA link and if you get a broken link,  take note fo the numbers at the end of the thread, and put this strand of address just before the numbers.

http://www.runtimedna.com/forum/showthread.php?p=

For example:

http://www.runtimedna.com/mod/forum/messages.php?ShowMessage=184683 (Broken Link)

Take the 184683  and put it at the end of  this:

http://www.runtimedna.com/forum/showthread.php?p=

To get this:

Not saying this isn't a GREAT thread.. but isn't something like this more suited for the Wiki?

I've been slowly trying to update my bookmark,  but I think they took away the Wiki. All of the links to it that I had bookmarked no longer work, and it isn't in the drop down menus.

I don't know if it was intentional or just an oversite.

If they deleted the Wiki I am going to have a major tantrum.  I spent hours formatting and assembling the shader links for the Wiki, so that we would not have the confusion that results from an ever-growing thread with things spread out in dozens of posts and not up to date or grouped.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
