Hi Folks! Roy, thanx for the obvious work you have put into compiling this list. A considerable amount of them seem to be sites that are no longer active (or at least I couldn't get them on my browser), but it's a great start, as I am looking for company to host a personal web site so that I can begin posting images on the Poser Forum. Peter (Dr
Great list indeed! One question however, which one will allow you to place your zipped funstuff on it and allow you to link to it from the funstuff section without being hassled by those "middleman" pages that make your link appear to be broken? And if the answer is none...will the forum start to make exceptions and allow us to link to our pages in order for people to download items?
I followed up on some of the places Roy posted. So far I also found http://free.prohosting.com/ to be the best bet. 15 mgs is allowed and also a cgi bin. Only draw back that I can find so far is they only allow 20 on the sever at a time. So you can't always get on to upload when you want but it does go faster when you do. Also if you don't do anything for 90 seconds you will get disconnected. Found my site so far to be fast and reliable, but I am still testing it out so have not switched yet.
Over the past few weeks I've been looking for another ISP. The one I'm with is the best in this area, and they're not even that good anymore. I thought that I'd open an account at AT&T, but they have the restrictions locked down on the website that I can't have my files there for download. I just finished signing up for a page at site.netscape.com - because I see that's where PANdaRUS has his files, and there's some glitch over there that won't allow me to create my site. Has anyone tried any of the ones mentioned above with any success as far as direct downloads? My brain is pretty fried from looking for a new ISP (may stay with AT&T I don't know) but I'm anxious to cancel my old account, and move the files.
whoops, my mistake! :) http://sites.netscape.com DOES allow you to place your files there for download - it's case sensitive, and my nerves were rattled, and I didn't realize that I couldn't access my files because of a few capital letters. Same with AT&T, where my Poser files are at right now, case sensitivity can get ya everytime :) So if you're looking for a place, check there.
Disclaimer : They aren't for everybody, but it works for me. Nationwide (actually worldwide) access at $21.95 a month ($9.95/mo if you already have an ISP you want to keep) 5 email addresses, 10 megs of space without banners accessible via http: and/or ftp: (20 megs if you create a web page and register it with their private search engine), 16meg file attachments. Support for X2, K56 and V.90 in most areas. Now that I have your attention their name is.... AOL
I use fortunecity... its nice, i get 20 megs free, my only complaint is the adds, BUT those don't appear for about a month after you upload, so all i have to do is reupload my html files, which takes all of a minute. for those interested, go to http://www.fortunecity.com Missy
I've used http://www.virtualave.net. They offer 20 Mb disk space CGI access from your own directory Utility for managing your account Unlimited email forwarding 24x7 tech. support New domain registration Unlimited traffic Existing domain transfer True FTP account and some other stuff. I haven't seen any policy regarding content i.e. adult material, which I take to mean it's okay. Kristyn
I have most of my Poser images on WebRealm (http://www.webrealm.com/). You get 10MB free for either adult or non-adult hosting, and one advertising graphic is placed automatically at the top of each page. When you sign up, you have to choose whether you want an adult or non-adult site. Uploading is through the Web only, but technical support is good and they allow innocent nude images on non-adult sites.
WWW.AREALCITY.COM - Free unlimited space for personal and small business use. They don't put ads in your pages (unless you want to put your own there) and they are not fussy on what kind of images you use (unless they're illegal). I'va had a site with them for about 6 months now and their upload rate is pretty fast too. I must have easilly used 30 megs so far.
For fantasy art nothing beats ELfwood: http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/ I've had a gallery of the art I did back in the late 80's up there since April. All hand drawn stuff. As soon as I get some poser art done I'll be adding that to my gallery as well. There's a variety of fantasy and sci fi artists. Using just about any technique you can imagine. Accroding to the site as of today: [2453 fantasy artists: 34843 pictures] - [496 sci/fi artists: 5420 pictures] - [552 writers: 3353 stories] Anyone can get a free gallery of up to 50 pictures. With forums, a chat channel, and even a section on art tutorials.
Here goes a easy tip to get rid of the anoying frame that XOOM puts in ur pages... Go to www.n3.net and get an account, they provide a great redirection service, giving you a www.yourdomain.n3.net address, and, with an option called "cloak", the XOOM frame just disapear...so, u can have all the space that XOOM offers...without the banner!!!
A place that I found, but haven't used yet, is www.spaceports.com They're a science fiction oriented host. They say they give you unlimited space, and all they require is that you place one banner on the page and split the revenue from the banner with them. Seems like a good deal, and when I get ready to put up like my sixth page, that's probably who I'll go with.
I have a question - I am experiencing a lot of page--not-found error page loads with Xoom pages - my own site and others - and then if you push "Refresh" the page loads normally. Same thing for separate illustrations on Xoom pages - if you right click non-loaded image - it is there and then loads - this seems like a big drawback for pages loaded on Xoom - does anyone else have this problem with Xoom? I do not have this experience with other providers - like Geocitys pages or Crosswinds - just with Xoom - makes me want to find another site, cause people will think my pages aren't posted correctly - Thanks for comments
Forget about Crosswinds.net- for awhile anyway... RAID goes down every few weeks and it takes another month and a half to get the new one in place- I haven't been able to upload a single file since I opened the account 3 weeks ago, even at 3 in the morning. I have the "page not found" thing periodically with Xoom, too. They definately have their problems and I'd love to find a decent provider...but the thing is these sites are free- that means that everybody and their brother are using them-it's damn hard to keep the bandwidth flowing smoothly. My ISP wants $80.00 a month for 20mb!! Oh well...Xoom it is.
The other alternative is to buy a domain name and sertver :] no site mess ups ect pay off in the long run of what you have to pay. And you can run a server off of your home computer with a unix or linux client or the Personal web server from microsoft....the bad thing to this is that this allows 56k connection only tops (with any type of modem)
I posted something to this effect on Renderotica last week, but I'll say it here as well: I have my own domain and quite a lot of unused disk space/bandwidth. I am willing to give space for galleries/files. There are no financial gimicks involved (meaning I don't want money for this), and just a few requirments: - galleries must be gay male oriented; - explict images must go behind an AVS (they are already in place); - I'm not asking for money for the web space, so don't try to make money off the pages you plan to set up; - Play fair. ;-) Oh, negotiable: I might ask you to place a banner ad (one only) somewhere. Anyone interested, email me. Fab
HOMESTEAD.COM SUCKS!!!! Every time I try to visit someone's web site or download something from there, 98% of the time I get this odious "Server Busy" notice. (I don't seem to have this problem anywhere else.) One thing's for sure -- when I finally get my site up and going, it WILL NOT be with HOMESTEAD.COM
Not a single free server I have approached has accepted my material. I have nude figures but no genital nudity to speak of and no sexual conduct at all yet every single site host I have tried has rejected my site, even drak.net! Help please! Does anyone know a free site that accepts sites with artistic nudity, there is no concievable way my work could be considered obscene! I can't afford to buy disc space on a porn server, not that I would really want to. What can I do!! --momodot--
I've run into a major problem with WebRealm: On June 16, my attempts to view my WebRealm site generated "file not found" errors; when I tried to load WebRealm's own home page, I got a "403 forbidden" error. The next day, I discovered that WebRealm now redirects to a pornographic site (1sexybabe.com). As Momodot has said, very few free Web hosts are willing to accept non-sexual nude images, regardless of their nature or how they were made. I, too, am unable to afford space on a commercial server. I'd appreciate help in finding a free host that accepts non-sexual nudity and doesn't switch to porn without notifying users.
