Description

This is my first serious attempt to achieve realism. The hardest challenge for me was to get relatively natural looking 3d-clouds. The next defiance was the adjustment of the reflection properties (especially the reflection of lightsources) of the water. Terrain is made with WorldMachine and is sized only 513 (limit of Shareware-Version). Surface is a combination of 19 Terragen surface layers and 5 layers with Image Overlays. Only postwork: a little contrast enhancement, resize (3072*2304 -> 1024*768) and a small amount of unsharp-mask. - Please tell me what you think - any comments, criticism or suggestions for improvement are very welcome! - - Thanks for viewing and have a nice day... -

3D clouds are really awesome, surface mapping excellent (rocks texture a bit bright but maybe calcareous), terrain and pov are great... maybe water color could be different, and without this double white shoreline ? Anyway a really excellent photorealistic render !

I like the bumpiness you have on the landscape and, as you have found out; the more layers the more real it can be, especially with the image overlays. You can always take your 513 WM terrain into Terragen and enlarge it from the Size window. Very good image.

Excellent First try! Clouds are excellent! Overlays can be a real pain I have found. LOL You can produce somewhat realistic rock with layers and child layers. I start from the ground up LOL pardon the Pun! Rock layers with child detail layers, dirt with topsoil child layer and then grasses with different shades and roughness. Underwater and shoreline I save until last. Just a thought...maybe try without overlays unless using strata or pebble overlays like Markal does. Excellent work Friend!

I really like your clouds, they are really fantistic, like Buzzzzz said, overlays can be difficult for realism (I don't know how Golog does it so well) but I always find that they are usually too bright for the best realism. Great first try at this, it's really beautiful, and I love your greens

Excellent render, the sky is one of the most realistic 3D cloudscapes I've seen. The surface work is very convincing and I think you achieved your goal with room to spare. The only thing that doesn't really fit is the surf - where does it come from on a small lake? ;-)

don't really think this is photorealistic - it is very well executed - but i wouldn't mistake it for a photo - all the realistic terragen pics i have seen so far have been low land lit, concentrating on clouds or water. if you know of any that don't fit this - please email me a link. anyways - i love your compo - i always tend to err on the side of the slightly fantastical:o)

Great job! The clouds are fantastic. I agree with Rids about the surf. I just doesn't seem like the water is rough enough for it. Overall an amazing image

This is more than a trial .... it is an accomplishment ! The terrain is amazingly realistic and the ligthing and atmo perfect ! the clouds ... well...have never seen such beautiful clouds in Terragen (without postwork)!!! You must have been tweaking settings for days (weeks???) !!! Anyway this is one is a definite VOTE ! Congratulations on an outstanding work of art !

Now, when I look again on this beautiful image, I can say an accurate opinion: except the left side of water and the too many surfs for a little lake, all are very realistical! I like very, very much the surfaces! I prefer the 2D clouds for realistic scenes, but your 3D clouds are excellent too! Bravo!

I totally agree with Paul...you have proven that one can produce excellent 3D clouds w/TG and some patience. This is your 'best work'! This is a keeper!!

The amount of surface layers has really paid off - each element of the landscape looks real!! The colours are just delicious and highly believable. The rock appears to be a little too white but I know it exists and a scene such as this is quite possible in nature. However if you're going for realism I'd dull it down a bit and hope you don't lose the WOW factor. You ever see a scene in nature and think well "there's too much light there" or the rocks are the wrong colour" or "I wouldn't have done it like that" LOL

That grass with the burnt out looking spots looks good. The cloud looks good too. Nice one for a first attempt at the hardest goal to achieve.

I would say you achieved your goal admirably. I love the rocky appearance of your terrain. The clouds are outstanding!
