This is really a test run, pushing the new rig to do things my old machine wasnt capable of. The scenry is extremely memory hungry as are the volumetrics and even with huge RAM and improved GPU, this took several iterations using several different atmosphere/fog variations to get something to work . In the end I opted for simple spots in an atmospheric cube volume. The final result isn't as dramatic as the image I had in my mind's eye , but works ok in any case. Now that i have a rig capable of rendering scenes like this in iray, i can experiment more (it was SO much easier back in the DS3/3delight days!) Other than being an obvious reference to the British cold-war era spy, the "Philby" in the title is also a commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the late great Rory Gallagher.
