Want to find out why Red Sonja is called the "She-Devil With a Sword"? At 17, goddess Scáthach has granted her supernatural skills after her village was pillaged by bandits and she became an orphan.
Would have been more helpful if the goddess gave her the powers *before*, so she could save her family from slaughter - but we don't question the gods, right? In addition, the powers were granted under a condition - she can only sleep with men who defeat her in battle, meaning (in the world of Conan) only after she's dead - which is kind of creepy. They didn't think this through. LOL But don't worry - Marvel has retconned her origin story many times since the 1970s.
