Description
~Sonja The Red II~
A new homage to Red Sonja from the "Conan The Barbarian" universe, created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973, partially inspired by Robert E. Howard's Red Sonya of Rogatino from a short story called "The Shadow of the Vulture" (1934).
So, there are actually 2 different Red Sonja's: the original one designed by Robert E. Howard, living in the 16th century Europe and participating in real-world events with historical people of the period, and the 1973 Marvel version who has retained the name and the skills with the sword, but lived in the fictitious Hyborian Age - the world of Conan the Barbarian.
Marvel has also retconned their version of Red Sonja's origin a number of times, so there are multiple versions as well. In the original, her village was attacked by bandits, her family is killed, and she is brutally violated. Left for dead, she cries out for vengeance. The goddess Scáthach appears and grants Sonja incredible combat skills, but with a condition: she can never sleep with a man unless he defeats her in fair combat.
This creates a funny (ironic) situation where Sonja can only sleep with men who wants to kill her, which is both nonsensical and self-defeating at the same time. It raises questions about what the heck a goddess like Scáthach had to do with who Sonja's sleeps with? It sounds more like a curse than a blessing, since Sonja has no agency to choose her own partners, which is kind of important in life. To sleep only with those who overcome her would happen anyway, so making it a condition is redundant.
As if not enough, in the world of Conan, sword fights ended in death, so Sonja being defeated means she is dead. Therefore, if taken to the last consequences, Scáthach's condition would be even more morbid and disturbing. If Sonja clearly understood the implications, she would likely just refuse the "gift" and beg to be killed right away and die with some dignity at the age of 17.
Or... we can just not think too much about it and enjoy the comics. 🙂

Wow, I never thought Sonja had such a complicated background story and you have done an excellent job in describing it. For now I will just enjoy how beautiful she looks here and try not to think about what happens upon her defeat. Congrats on always doing these images together with such awesome background stories...this redhead looks amazing! :-)

Thank you! Conan's first woman was the pirate queen Belit (brunette), the 2nd was Valeria (blonde), and then finally Sonja (redhead), so if his taste on women was improving over time, Sonja the redhead was the cherry on top. ^____^

Such a beauty, and an unfairly tragic one.

Thank you! Yes, Marvel wanted to create an "empowered" female character but ended up messing up the premise. That's likely why they have retconned her backstory so many times. :)

... she could simply choose other weapons ... something like a pillow ... just as an idea.
Thank you for the details and the great render!
