Description

Due to the high polygon count (50 billion or more) in some of my Vue scenes, I am now learning how to render the backgrounds as separate layers and then put them together in Photoshop. I used to call that cheating but now I'm not so sure. Tools used: 3ds Max: design and model construction 3D-Coat: voxel sculpting and re-topology Vue: materials, plants, Ecosystems, atmosphere and renders Photoshop: adjustments, filtering and compositing Thanks for looking! **for a better view click here**

A whimsically awesome picture. Compositing is not cheating it using all the tools that are available to you to create the best pictures you can. When I have figures in my images, I render them in poser and place them in my Vue images. I think poser renders figures better than Vue. - Bob

Beautiful bright and peaceful scene ! I reaaly like the vibrant colors. The modeling is excellent. I agree with bob4artist, 3D is often about cheats and turnarounds. What really counts is the beauty of the result, not the tricks you use ... and that's maybe the magic of it. ;)

Excellent modelling and texturing, superb composition and lighting !! This is a very beautiful image !! I don't think the purpose is to do exercices and demonstrate our abilities to use a program and render a whole scene in just a layer, without compositing or postwork or something like that ! I think the only purpose is to create the image we want ! What really counts is the final result, the final image, and we can use all the possibilities allowed by the computer to do that !! It's not cheating ! It's just doing our best for the best image !! Keep on create your magnificent pictures and don't worry about the making of !!

Another stunning peek into paradise. I wonder how many miles of real estate it would take if your scenes were created in real life and connected together by your winding stone paths and stairways. I'd love to go there. Wonderful work Butch. I agree with AureliusdeMercoeur, it's not cheating. It's the desired end effect that is the goal. Computers and software are only tools to achieve that desired end, why cripple your art, use every means available to create it.

I'm with the others here, it's not cheating at all; that's the beauty of compositing, it can save so much time with renders and I find that it helps me fine tune my digital painting skills as well~ This is simply beautiful work!

Nobody ever said you should ever do all the work in one program. That would be most restricting. I applaud the way this has been composed and can only suggest that the author should try to achieve a better depth of field effect as it looks too flat as is. Since photoshop is used to compose, then this is easy to achieve on each layer and would improve it enormously. These comments are not a complaint, merely an observation intended to offer just a teeny bit of help.
