Description

About the same time that Highbridge was near being finished a spot along the Messinar River was being settled. The Messinar River's source was very near the source of the Green Water River that flowed south and passed under Highbridge. About halfway along the Messinar River's journey to Messinia it was broken by a waterfall. Before the falls was a wide, flat and shallow area that was easily forded when the river was low. This spot is where a settlement began and within fifty years it grew to a fair sized town. Ferrying people and trade across the river was soon becoming inefficient. River highs and lows made for seasonal and weather based travel. Goods and mined metals from the Barrier Mountains also faced the falls on their way to Messinia. A plan involving prominent Wizards, architects and builders was devised to fix this. Longbridge was born of this idea. First a long and winding river extension was dug that would lead from up river and weave a gradual course to rejoin the main river a mile below the falls. Meanwhile a bridge and dam were built along the falls to control the river flow and allow easy passage across the river. This paved bridge would allow for buildings to be built along it and would extend south and east as it eventually crossed the new river extension as well. In this image we see the first section that is a bridge and dam over the falls. Before the falls is now a port for river boats that travel between the mountains and Longbridge. Traffic to the ocean and Messinia uses the new extension that takes a leisurely five mile stroll to meet up with the main river. The dam helps maintain the river height during winter and summer seasons and enables safer passage along the new extension as well as making for a stable river port. Notes: I wanted to make an image of this area, but as yet had no part of the story that would include Longbridge very soon. The town will show up later in the story and so I will make an alternative POV at that time. For now here's something of the image that was playing out in my head. This is outstanding, Art. A good design there with the central buttress considering their must be a lot of pressure on the backside of the bridge. Your town is lovely, too. Wonderful colors and atmosphere in this!
