A few moments of awkward silence passed after Hadron and Winslet conceded to Ertha's plan. Finally Winslet spoke in a huffy manner, 'OK, what now?'
'That's up to you and Hadron now. I assume you have a timetable or plan of some sort.' Ertha said as she turned to the great blue dragon.
'We have a long journey and it is not my intention on carrying this brat the whole way.' His voice came out in a deep, gravelly rumble that echoed in the cave.
'You do not need to carry me, nor would I let you touch me. I have my own methods of travel and I'm sure you'll be pressed to keep up with me.'
Ertha chuckled, 'Perhaps you've met your match, oh great Khan.'
The dragon hissed again.
'I must take my leave. Winslet, mind what I've said and remember it is okay to pause and think rather than react, once in a while.' Ertha embraced the pale skinned Nordokan then faded before their eyes.
'Well dragon, when do we leave?'
'Now. There is no more time for ceremony and I fear the council will not accept you as a witness. My mother will have to keep things together until our return, so the sooner the better. If Ertha will meet us upon return, then your witness will be validated.'
'Fine, let's go, you lead.'
Hadron looked at her with a questioning look, not that Winslet could really read his expressions, then shrugged and exited the cave. Winslet followed. He looked back once and took to the air. Winslet uttered one word while spreading her cloak and it immediately changed to blue and glowing feathered wings. She sped after Khan and caught up with him instantly. She did a few circles around him just to show off.
The dragon huffed and said, 'Hmph! I must say I'm impressed.' Then with great pulsing of wing muscles, Hadron pumped and took to the sky higher and higher. Winslet followed without effort.
The sun was already on it's descent when Ertha and Winslet had arrived, but in the air their were no obstacles so the two unlikely allies flew into the evening before settling in for the night. Winslet kept to business at hand asked questions of their route and destination.
'By tomorrow mid-day we will reach the badlands. There we will have trouble crossing. Magic is weakened and almost non-existent at the center. I can still fly without magic, though it will be labored. I suspect your fancy cape will not work at all. So we either walk much of the three hundred mile territory or I will have to carry you.'
Without looking at him Winslet simply said, 'Whatever.'
Hadron snorted and shook his head. 'I must rest.' He said, then laid down and was soon asleep.
Winslet looked at the blue mountain of scales and leathery wings and sighed. What had she gotten herself into. After a few hours she woke Khan and got some rest herself. It seemed foolish to need to stand watch, after all, who would disturb a giant sleeping dragon. Well there were things in this world as horrid and worse than a dragon and the further south they went, the further from civilization they would be.
When Winslet awoke, there was a small fire burning with meat on a stick hanging over it. She was taken aback.
'Did you do this?'
'It didn't impale itself on a stick over a flame by itself. We will both need strength and I know it's safer for your kind to eat cooked meat.' Then Winslet spied to wild buffalo carcasses, or what was left of them. Hadron had saved some of the meat for her and started a small fire to cook it. 'I need you for the journey there and back. After that we do not have to see each other again.'
Winslet thought, ' ' Just like a male. Taking a nice gesture and flipping it upside down.' ' Again her vocal response was, 'Whatever.'
'A vast vocabulary you possess.' Replied Hadron.
