Description
And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure, similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life. She did not see me at first, but just as she was disappearing through the portal of the building which was to be her prison she turned, and her eyes met mine. Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Her skin was of a light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a strangely enhancing effect.
-- A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
"Barsoomian Nights" is a remix of one of my entires into the Frazetta contest over at DAZ. I have removed the extensive faux paintwork but left the canvas overlay.
DAZ Studio render with postwork in Photoshop. Background rendered in Bryce.
pwSurface was used on all surfaces in this mage except the backdrop. The background was originally rendered for another scene and had some dragons flying about and perched on the buildings... these were painted out in photoshop prior to the backdrop being added to the scene.
The Victoria 4 martian princess character is 'Zavia' from DAZ and her outfit is (naturally enough) 'Martian Princess' also from DAZ. Hair is 'Wild Hair' from RDNA and props are from 'Mixed Fantasy' and 'Propose' by Danie and Marfano, available right here at Renderosity. Pose is started out as a 'Propose' pose with some modification.
Lighting is more or less Basic Studio Lighting from Dreamlight with an extra distant light thrown in for the moonlight.
I rendered out a mask of the background and blurred that a bit and applied that as a layer to give a bit of bloom to the moonlight scene in the background.
I also scanned a piece of artists' canvas textured paper and added this in overlay mode over the image to give the canvas effect.
Other than that there is a bit of levels adjustment and the text.
Thanks as always for your comments and criticism. Also special thanks to everyone who participated in the Frazetta tribute contest over at DAZ and made that such a special event.

Fantastic! This is undoubtably what Edgar Rice was dreaming of when he described his Martian Princess! Great picture!

Wonderful picture, Michael. I'm sure, Burroughs had something like this in his mind, when he wrote his John Carter books. Great work! Greetings Lemy

"Frazetta" is exactly what I first thought of when I saw this, so I'm not surprised by your comments! Great work!

Oh, man, you really have the Frazetta "feel" down. How you managed the backdrop was very smart - it really adds depth to the image and gives it a dreamy quality without blurring the whole image. I like the subtle canvas texture as well. Gorgeous lighting.

What can I say, other than simply stunning. An excellent work of art. I wish I could judge the contest and award the prizes to you. I entered it to, now I see it was a waste of time because your image beats mine hands down.

nice technique on the paper texture. it shows care and attention to detail that you used something unique and used it subtly. it doesnt' "feel" like Frazetta to me, personally. the pose isn't dynamic (even relaxed Frazetta poses are dynamic), nor is the light or colors, and there's only a woman with no man or creatures. so, just personally, i see something that is clearly inspired by Frazetta but still unique to the artist. and even though i'm pretty sure you didn't model or texture anything in it, it seems very deliberately used and particular to you. it's like you took commercial content and elements of Frazetta's style and did your own rendition. i love the subtle depth blur on the mid-ground elements. beautiful skin, as always, and i appreciate details like the nail polish that matches her clothing. i think if you had a pose that showed the right side of her torso, you would show her figure off much better, her hair seems less richly shaded than her skin, and imho, her face suffers from standard V4/A3 profile issues. but not only are those just opinions, i think they're very minor compared to the overall quality of the image.

Wow! I seem to always start my comments with wow. giggle You know what I keep noticing is how realistic the body jewelry is, especially around her shins. They just pop out especially with the AO, and the texture on the metal is topnotch. The chain hanging down across the small of her back gives the same flattering affect. It's wonderful, Michael! I noticed the canvas matte on the picture. It would have been interesting to see it with the "paint on." So did you place in the contest? You better have; this is very Frazetta like!
