Subject: Multiple Views in Wings?

I've seen several posts which look as though there are 3 or 4 windows at once with different views in each, although I suppose they may just be 3 or 4 screen captures put together! If it is possible to have more than one window open at a time, how the hell do you do it? I can't figure it out at all, I'm on a Mac if that makes any difference. Baz

Never mind, I've found out it's not possible, shame, I find it a lot easier with multiple views! Still you can jump from one view to another really easily so maybe I'll get used to it! I was hoping that you could model poly by poly too but I don't think you can. I find that method a lot more intuitive than modifying primitives Oh and another thing, there must be a way of subdividing the faces of an object without smoothing them surely. When you create a cube it appears with just eight vertices, is there anyway of easily changing it so there is 16 vertices to a face for instance? I'm sure it's worth persevering with as I've heard so many good things about the programme but there seems to me to be some simple tools missing that would make it a lot easier to use. Why can't you just add points where you want them insead of subdividing an edge and the having to reposition the points afterwards! I am a complete beginner as far as modelling is concerned so maybe a bit of practice and it'll start to make sense :o) Baz

There are a couple of ways... for a whole object, select the object and switch to edge mode (this mean all edges will be selected)... right click and select "Hardness"... "Hard"... then "Smooth" this will subdivide the object without changing the shape of the Hard edges. for a face... select the edges you want to create the vertices on... to make one edge between the selected two (on their midpoints) select "Connect"... to make multiple parallel edges... select "Cut" and the number of faces you want to create... this will throw you into vertex selection mode with the new vertices selected... "Connect" will make the parallel edges/faces. I hope this helps... I'm not an expert, but I know this much. :-)

>Why can't you just add points where you want them... You can... with a plugin called DrawLoop. You can find it here: http://membres.lycos.fr/dong3d/plugsdone/ Just download and place them in Wings3D's plugins directory. >I was hoping that you could model poly by poly too but I don't think you can. Right- you can't. There's nothing wrong with modeling poly by poly but that's not what Wings3D is all about. It's a box modeler. >...seems to me to be some simple tools missing that would make it a lot easier to use. I suppose it's just what you get used to using. I'm not much of a modeler yet but so far I have found Wings3D to be the easiest and most straight forward modeler I have tried. You will probably be pleasantly surprised at what can be done once you have a bit more experience with it. One thing to remember- Wings3D is still in beta with features yet to be added. Even though it still unfinished it is remarkably stable and extremely useful. Here's my first try at modeling some figures. Even though I am a beginner at all this I was still pleased with the results of about an hour and a half. (and yes, I wanted them very stylistic and without detail.) I really recommend this program.

Just for contrast here's something else done by Wings3D and rendered in Bryce.

jval... very very nice... I'm going to have to download drawloop. Edge Loop and Edge Ring are very useful... sounds like Draw Loop will help round things out nicely. I think Wings3D is amazing at what it does. You can do rapid prototypes in a very easy/native interface. You can keep going and create some really wonderful work. For me, I tend to use it for the rapid prototyping/3D sketching. , fgeorge

Ah what would I do without renderosity? Thankyou all very much you've been a big help! The plugin looks useful, I'll definately give it a try if it works on a Mac. This looks like the best freebie modeller for the Mac and I'll certainly persevere with it. I know I'm not going to find modelling easy! I've tried a number of apps and really only got on with Amapi which I don't really like, it's a bit unstable and clunky and Cinema which I loved immediately but I can't afford it! I think the reason I got on OK with those two are that they allow poly by poly modelling which immediately makes some sense to me. Wings is slowly starting to make some sense and your advice will make it easier still. Maybe I'll post one of my efforts if I can make anything recogniseable! Thanks again Baz
