Subject: Free Hair Textures, need advice

I've been playing around with Kozabura's hair tex for the Daz Wedge and wonderwedge. And I've been frustrated with the scarcity of colors for it. So I threw it into KPT's Convolver And came up with several. These are the semi-normal colors. Is this kosher? Can I offer these as free stuff? And would anyone want them? The last 2 on the page use CoolTuna's handcolored texture for the Feathered style, and I'm really not sure if that's ok to offer.

Some of theme look almost identical in both groups, part of that is the small picture, and some only have slight differences but they are differences in tone which might be important-- cool as opposed to warmer. I can do lighter browns too. I didn't realise how much Poser darkens the color.

If you are able to give these away, I would certainly be interested! :) Jay

Since they are just recolors you'd have to get Koz's permission first. So you couldn't give them away (unless Koz says so in his readme) If they are textures sold in the marketplace it is almost certain that you could not. I think thats right :Grins: Anz

Email Kozaburo and ask him if you can give away those textures - he's the sweetest guy and I'm sure he'll give you his permission :-)

Great, I'll email him this evening. All of these are from freebies I culled from our free stuff and other places.

I've seen other freebie textures for Koz's hair around. I don't think he'd mind your adaptations. It's not exactly as if everybody and his pet cat didn't already use Kozaburo's wonderful work.

Yeah but you should ask anyways. I'd love to have 'em especially the wilder colors :) Lyrra

Strangechilde ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 10:11 PM

Oh, yes, of course one should ask! I merely mentioned it by way of encouragement. :)

queri ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 10:57 PM

Thanks for the encouragement, but we gots a problem. Koz made the original transmap for Daz, and they own the copyright. Do you think they're gonna let me hand it out? I don't think so. Don't even know who to ask. I just got an email back from Kozaburo saying he had to have a special permission for posting the dark texture at his site-- of his own tex. Course it's not his copyright anymore.

Any ideas? I do suggest if anyone does want the fancy colors that they look into surplus software stores. Some of them still have KPT Convolver. It was fairly easy to color both the dark and the light textures. I pretty sure I have have a right to color the texture I bought for my own uses. As would anyone else. But I don't want to go up against DAZ.

If it is a texture map for a Daz product, and you don't include the product itself if you make your textures available, and Kozaburo says it's okay, it should be fine, but have a look at the wedge cut license (I don't have it, so can't look myself) or e-mail Daz to be sure.

The Wedge cut license-- and a long intricate machination it is--has the usual prohibitions against taking any part of the model, I would assume the texture is a part of the model, and changing it and/or distributing it in any manner. I notice they now have Koz's dark texture available on their site as a freebie, along with a grey one. I dunno, the licence sounds like maybe I'm not supposed to change the color for myself-- though I'm going to continue. It is ironic to see textures for the gel-cut on sale while I'm in this dilemma. Did I buy them, oh yeah.

Coloring the blonde map is even more effective for pastels. See link.

You could always write to DAZ and ask for special permission to distribute these. You might not get it but then again you might. You can always modify textures for your own use, no matter how forbiding the license sounds - you just can't pass the modified versions on to anybody else.

The thing is - I have a collection of wedge colors that I DL'd from various places. Are all those in violation of the copyright? Uh. Somebody should ask the DAZ dudes, I guess. Lyrra
