What are the nuggets on this site that you recommend one should download before they are gone forever?

Dont know if we can post links here but the name of the maker and object must be ok?

DarthJ posted Thu, 03 April 2025 at 2:41 PM

I have downloaded my own uploads. I have considered reposting these in the Renderosity Freestuff BUT

- some of that stuff is ridiculously outdated, vintage 2010s, no Superfly materials etc ... Would require extensive updating.

- some of that stuff is even outright "meh" not worth posting anymore.

- some of that stuff was complained about. Especially about the NSFW artwork.

- some of that stuff used textures downloaded from the internet. Renderosity could get fussy about that. Actually they get fussy about everything.

And my thread in the freestuff forum where I used to post about upcoming freebies has gone "404", actually the whole freestuff forum seems to have gone "404". Maybe it's hidden somewhere.

Sharecg seems to be gone indeed. That means I can now sell my rare downloads at exorbitant prices. Double those prices for anyone residing in the USA.

As Sharecg is for sale the one logical site to acquire it is Renderosity. Quite a few of Sharecg freebies were posted in the Renderosity freestuff also.

On the other hand some people used Sharecg because they wanted to avoid Renderosity. They might not be so amused to find their freebies there nevertheless.

IMO it's not a money problem: sharecg leads to "Internet Business System", which leads to ibsys dot com, not something that's going to close from the corresp., website, it looks more like a choice to close any free resources.

Nothing new.

They're not just closing ShareCG, though. They're closing a bunch of their web sites, some of which don't offer free stuff.

"After many years of serving the engineering and design communities through our network of websites β€” including EDACafe.com, GISCafe.com, MCADCafe.com, AECCafe.com, TechJobsCafe.com, and ShareCG.com β€” it is with deep regret that we announce the upcoming closure of all platforms due to financial challenges."

I think this is a result of the crash in ad revenue. Traditional web sites are hurting, as people migrate to social media. They're going the way of a lot of other sites. Buzzfeed News, Vice.com, Jezebel. SB Nation cut coverage of many major sports teams. Daily Kos has admitted they're struggling and have had to layoff staff.

It's becoming very difficult to support a web site on ad revenue.

I don't disagree. A lot of old media is dying, and traditional web sites might be included.

Paradigm shifts are often chaotic. Clay Shirky has compared what's happening with what happened after the invention of the printing press.

Eventually, we'll figure it out. But it takes time, and the transition will be a mess. And no one can predict what the end result will be.

Closing the site makes me really, really sad.
So many nearly antique models will be lost forever. Today, I can’t even open the site – maybe it's already closed. That’s really sad, especially because I had some bookmarked content that is now gone.

Wouldn’t it be great if they decided to reopen the site for downloads without requiring a login – or at least allow the Web Archive to preserve it?

Might just need to ask RenderHub to make a Poser section, considering the fact that sharecg is redirecting people there and working with RH.  The board works just like on sharecg, a member can make a post and has full control, no mess with testers and waiting times for publishing, making it convenient for artists and the ones who share freebies. A poser section might be a positive section for them to have,  it might even make poser a little popular and attract new Interests considering that they have quiet a choice of creators there, could be a win win considering that poser is loosing members every day.

I was already thinking of asking them as most I made is for Poser the past decades, just have not found the time jet due all of the work with the new DS projects and extended modules that I started last year, to be able to offer assets for both platforms.

Renderhub has now a main Poser category in the Daz Content Pane on the bottom, They also added all necessary Poser subcategories for vendors. Might take a while until it makes the round and creators start adding some Poser creations there. Could make poser popular again if the products are of good quality with some attractive Promos, guess I will as soon as I got a little time drop some of my poser freebies and products there, since they also have poser in there marketing Plan .

Started today adding Poser assets on RH, time will tell if it helps bringing poser a little back and hopefully some new creators. Whilst dropping some of these poser products it gives me the opportunity making some Product updates and if needed Textures with higher resolutions without affecting the load to much. Will see if the efforts are worth it as it is quiet time consuming repacking, updating, and posting these models.

I certainly hope that it makes Poser a little more popular since Bondware is still engaged updating the Poser Plattform. and sure no loss for a creator supporting multiple Platforms.

I am slowly trying to make some Poser Posts on RH to see if it will pull a little again, sure not to be compared with the DS hits but considering that the section is rather new now. I tried with some Environments and now with standalone creatures using the latest skinning technologies. One Poser Freebie, to be able to compare the download statistics between the DS and poser versions, this gives me a clue on how many are still interested in Poser.

The result was 20% of the amount of DS, watch and DL so there still is hope. Alone it would not really work this is clear, to cause that poser gets some new attention, but it might cause that some other creators start offering poser versions. Honestly sales are on the ground but not zero so there would be some efforts to be done, it might still be possible.

The downside even that Poser is a attractive platform is that users are scarred due the marketing strategies from Bondware. Not attractive Site, expensive considering the actual support from creators, Investment for models that are old and not ajour with the new poser version, and especially the Call Home leaving a bad taste to continue supporting the platform, some points that Bondware should be working on if they really want Poser to pull again. It has been 5 years now since they acquired Poser so they slowly should realize where the problems are, causing that it is not pulling like it should.

Rhia474 posted Sun, 04 May 2025 at 11:05 AM

Well, not many know that Renderhub now has Poser assets since it is in no way marked on their page, so it is rather similarly non-marketed.

Versum posted Sun, 04 May 2025 at 1:11 PM

Things have to start somewhere, if creators note that there could be some sales they will jump on it. If there are no customers nothing can be done about it, just making poser freebies would not be the solution for sure. The Poser community is not very productive, they are not very motivated rather contra productive, a phenomenon that happens already quiet for a while. All this is making it quiet difficult for Poser creators :)

Rhia474 posted Sun, 04 May 2025 at 2:57 PM

Trust me, it makes it hard for those end users as well who would like to use Poser for something else than 2008 style office or pr)n renders, okay? The lack of new products that can be used for genre renders is appalling (and yes, due to the exodus of content creators partially, which is due to lack of said creators willing to use updated tools, which is...a string of bad decisions going back into the mid 2010s when Poser was in different hands).

Versum posted Mon, 05 May 2025 at 4:20 AM

I use quiet advanced tools for models to make them universal, actually would not be a big issue for creators with experience. So I just give it a shot at renderhub if it is causing some other poser creators to share there creations then it is only positive, if not and the assets are just remaining as storekeepers, then it just would not have to be. Quiet simple! It can be seen rather fast in a store weather it is worth or not, with a few different theme releases also looking at the hits of other Poser creators and likes, the interests can be estimated this way.  the only thing that can be done is to give it a shot.

A creator normally stops supporting a platform if end users , customers are leaving, Creators fallow the Interests of the ones who invest in there work, it has not much to do weather a platform is better or not.

When the content quality and amount that I could use is less than less, usable advice and tutorials for basic functions are difficult or impossible to find, the communities that were thriving are slowly dying to the extent that there are barely active forum threads here,  it is more and more frustrating to render in tbe program I used to love, yes. Worthwhile but very difficult.

AmbientShade posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 9:27 AM

What tutorials are you looking for?

I did one on the grouping tool some years back. Was thinking about doing some more.

Rhia474 posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 10:57 AM

Not just for me, there are  requests I see here a LOT from people who haven't been in Poserdom since P8 days or earlier. Very basic needs for P13 specific tutorials in general I see a need for from many. How to link Runtime. How Superfly shaders work, what are PBR maps, where to get them, how to hook them up in the MaterialRoom, with actual exaples. How LIGHTING is different so we don't get these horrid washed out renders any more. Area lights, HDRI backgrounds, less is more, etc.

For myself: specific need for converting clothing from figures that are in A pose ( for example Genesis 2 or 3 in DAZ) to T pose figures in Poser.  Exporting in a form useable in Poser, grouping it in Poser, how to use its texture maps in Poser.  I have bits and pieces from lovely veteran users here ( with many thanks!) but I find that often several steps that they take for granted 'welding the groups' for instance, are not self- evident for an end user like me, and are intimidating.

AmbientShade posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 11:47 AM

Gotcha.

You can export any model from DS in obj format and it will load in Poser. The export menu has an option to export it in Poser scale. It's not always correct but it's usually close enough to work with. You can scale it down further if needed to get it to the size you want it then export and re-import in Poser and that bakes in the Poser size you want.

For A and T pose clothing conversion, you can pose the clothing in DS and export it in that pose as an obj. It won't have it's rigging but you'll need to re-rig it in Poser anyway for it to work with whichever figure you want it to fit. You'll need to use a combination of the morph brush and magnets to really get the clothing model to fit the figure you want it to fit. Fitting room can do an alright job with some things but that's an algorithm that's more or less just pushing the clothing geometry to the figure geometry and doesn't allow much control like morphs and magnets can. Converting clothing is one of the tutorial ideas I've been working out for when I release my figures (yeah that's still happening), just haven't gotten to it yet.

Rhia474 posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 11:56 AM

Clothes conversion is almost like it's kept as a secret; a step by step would be MUCH appreciated, yes.

wfbp1w posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 3:44 PM

By the way, Genesis 2 and 3 are still in T pose, Genesis 8 / 9 is A pose, there is a clothconverter for studio that can convert clothes from genesis 8 back to genesis 2 if autofit doesnt work.

JoePublic posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 3:45 PM

I don't understand why people want to convert clothes to a figure instead of doing it the other way round.

If you want to convert 100 G2 clothes to, let's say V4, you have to do 100 unique conversions.

If you convert V4 to natively be able to wear G2 clothing, you have to only do ONE conversion.

Here's the Poser 4 "Dork", Poser 6 James and Michael 2 P4, all being re-sculpted and re-rigged to natively wear M4 clothing:

These are NOT hybrids. All still consist of their original meshes and use their original textures and head morphs.

They obviously all can use M4 poses.

M4 bodymorphs could also be easily transferred to them, too, if necessary.

*

IMO, automated cloth conversion ALWAYS messes up the clothing, especially if a lot of re-scaling and re-grouping is involved - We know that since the Wardrobe Wizard days.

So, personally, if I really do need a conversion at all, I either do it 100% manually (Not even using the Fitting room), or I just spend a day or two and create a figure like shown above.

Back in the day, DAZ did this all the time with most of their figures, so why not keep on doing this?

Rhia474 posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 4:11 PM

M4 wearing M3 clothing, M2 wearing Rikishi clothing, V3RR wearing Posette clothing:

Clothing items were NOT converted.

*

The problem is, to do this, you need a REALLY good knowledge of the morphbrush and about rigging and grouping, so while the principle is easy, the actual conversion is quite involved.

I have hundreds of hours of morphbrushing and weightmapping "under my belt", so a true "beginner friendly" tutorial would have to be VERY elaborate and detailed. Screenshots alone would probably not do, so I'd first have to learn to use video-capture myself and how to edit t and on and on.

Given my health, I sadly don't have the energy left to invest a lot of time into such a project.

This post is to show what can be done INSIDE Poser, just using the morphbrush and the Setup-Room.

There are also copyright problems involved when trying to redistribute a modified figure. (But I'm sure someone cleverer than me could come up with a scripting solution)

*

The basic steps are:

1. Import the figure that natively can wear the clothes you want to use. Either ZERO it and the LOCK it, or just import the mesh as an object file. Then give it a contrasting paint. I prefer light blue but anything that is not skin-toned works.

2. Import the figure you want to be able to wear the clothing.

3. Scale and pose the figure until its proportions closely resemble the "native" figure. Try to scale the head and perhaps the neck of the modified figure to match the "native" figure. This will make hair conversion easier.

4. Make sure the hands and fingers also "fit" over the hands and figures of the "native figures like a glove.

REMEMBER, you can pose AND scale each bodypart until you get the best fit. Some scale dials might be hidden, so use a script to unhide them. (I use SceneFixer in Poser 11)

5. THE HANDS AND FINGERS ARE THE HARDEST, but the more time you spend, the better the result will look.

6. Use the morphbrush to push, pull and smooth the mesh. Also use the "Tighten Fit" and "Loosen Fit" brushes.

7. The idea is that the modified figure should fit like a glove over the "native" figure. The tighter the fit, the better the clothes will fit.

8. Again, BE CAREFUL with the hands. Smooth the fingers, BUT NOT THE FINGERNAILS!

(But when you mess up, you can either undo the modifications or use the morphbrushes "RESTORE" brush.)

Thankfully, you only have to do one side, because the morphbrush morph an be mirrored.

9. THE MORPHBRUSH IS NOT PERFECT, so sometimes you need the "Smooth" brush to edit out crumpling.

Smoothing shrinks the mesh, so you again need to use "Tighten Fit" and/or "Loosen Fit" to add more volume.

10. NOW COMES THE GROUPING:

The modified figure needs to have the EXACT same grouping as the "native" figure. This can get tricky. (So that's why I detest "clever" rigging using extra bones and stuff)

Re-grouping can be done in Poser, but I prefer Wings3D.

Export the modified figure as an object file and import it to Wings3D. (Import scale 20.0, Export scale 0.05. THIS IS IMPORTANT)

WELD superflous bodyparts. (Let's say the "native" figure just has thighs, but the figure you want to modify also has buttocks. Then WELD the rButtock to the rThigh and lButtock to lThigh. Make sure the newly combined bodypart has the correct name.)

Sometimes bodyparts just need to be renamed, like eyes. "Ghost bones" can be ignored/deleted.

For example, if your "native" figure has no separate toes, but your modified figure has, make sure to weld and rename all individual toes into one toe group, just like your "native" figure.

GROUPS AND GROUP NAMES MUST BE IDENTICAL.

11. If you're REALLY sure everything is allright, export your modified figure as an object file, and import it into Poser.

Enter the SetUp room and transfer the rigging of your "native" figure over to your modified mesh, turning your object file into an actual Poser figure.

12. Then comes the "clean-up". As the mesh geometry is different, the rigging probably needs editing. Also, you need to transfer the head morphs back from an original copy of your modified figure. I use Morphmanager for it, as it gives better results than the Poser morph transfer.

13. If all was correct, your new modified figure should now be able to wear the clothes of your "native" figure without further modification necessary.

Again, this is not for beginners. I have modified, re-sculpted and re-rigged figure for 24 years now, and I STILL make mistakes, run into problems, have to undo my work and try another day.

But this is the basic principle, and maybe some of the more professional content providers are willing to do such coversions for free or for sale. And solve the copyright problem(s), too.

Rhia474 posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 6:24 PM

"The problem is, to do this, you need a REALLY good knowledge of the morphbrush and about rigging and grouping, so while the principle is easy, the actual conversion is quite involved."

Right. So it's useless for the end user (like you say in conclusion) unless there are tutorials FOR the morph brush and the rigging and grouping tool. And believe me, I looked. As I said, there are very generous veterans here who shared knowledge, but without understanding the basics you guys take for granted, it is really like you are saying 'you are sh*t out of luck'. Everything you say above tells me 'there are details here you should know. The way you talk about 're-grouping can be done in Poser but I prefer Wings3d...Ookay. That was helpful to me, the end user who'd like to understand the process, how? What is Wings 3D? Is it free? Where can it be gotten? How does one learn it?

See what I mean? Tutorials should be written with the end user in mind and nothing should be taken for granted. Otherwise it is rather elitist, telling me I will never be able to do this, it is discouraging to the extreme, when I would LOVE to start somewhere. So, you know, like you did, I can practice.

The average user does not know how to use the grouping tool because again, guess what: no modern tutorials for it that were not written in the Poser 6 days and which are largely unavailable because they were on dead sites, anyway. Or what welding is. Or what 'rigging probably needs editing' means. This is what I have been screaming about for literally years.

So thank you for at least being honest about what you think I will never be able to do. That made things really clear.

JoePublic posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 7:41 PM

Rhia, believe me, I DO feel exactly the same when trying to understand a Blender, a Z-Brush, not to mention a 3D-Max tutorial.

But I didn't learn sculpting with the morphbrush or rigging from tutorials. Can't even remember ever reading a proper magnet tutorial.

Yes, following  Dr Geep's "University" helped a lot.

https://www.renderosity.com/forums/threads/2765813/introduction-to-poser-7-by-dr-geep?page=1

But most of it was "learning by doing". And failing. A lot. And trying again.

And I'm still not happy with my results.

Poser rigging and Studio rigging have drifted apart A LOT in the last decade. Even V4/M4 weren't 100% Poser comatible anymore.

Just for fun I tried to export Genesis 8.1F as a Poser figure.

Tried several time using different settings, but still only got this:

But without a working Poser rig, it's impossible to create a figure that could wear G8.1F clothing in Poser.

Transfering G8.1F's shape to another figure is the "easy" part, but translating the rigging from DAZ to Poser will probably need some elaborate scripting. Which I'm absolutely clueless about.

I never bothered to learn scripting. It's just something I think I'm not talented for, anyway so why waste my time learning it?

See, the real problem is that Poser isn't commercially viable anymore.

The really talented clothing artists abandoned it, because it's native figures are, let's say, uninspiring.

And the majority of Poser users followed them, because they went where the pretty figures and the pretty clothes are.

So, I think your frustration is not that you didn't took the time in the past to learn all the tools Poser had to offer, but that there is no more quality support for the native Poser figures.

If Poser had a figure that top artists would still find worthwhile to support, or if G8/G9 would still work natively in Poser, you wouldn't actually want to learn the morphbrush or rigging.

I simply can't transfer decades of experience into your brain in a reasonable amount of time.

Or have the energy left to create hour long video tutorials.

*

Not to mention that I'm simply not interrested in Genesis or any newer Poser figure at all. Or their stuff.

Especially as there's still so much fun to be had with the early DAZ/Poser figures.

If someone wants to create such a figure and does have the necessary experience, but runs into a problem, I won't mind having a look and share my experience.

But I simply can't invest the time (anymore) to create a true beginners tutorial from scratch. Sorry. Really

My honest suggestion: If you really want all the nice stuff offered for Gen 8 and G9, just download DAZ Studio!

If you just want to make pretty pictures, it's really not hard to use.

Or, even better, learn Blender. (Lots of tutorials how to get Genesis into Blender)

Poser is dead. I just still use it out of mere stubbornness and because I don't want to give up 20+ years of sculpting/rigging work I did.

But if I were 20years younger, I'd ditch it in a heartbeat, download Blender and never look back.

AmbientShade posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 7:59 PM

JP's method is valid but it's a lot more involved and definitely not beginner friendly. Plus you'd end up with all your figures looking like M4/V4, which you already have so I don't really see the point. But regardless, it's much easier to convert an existing clothing model to fit a different figure, even if it means you have to do the same process for every piece of clothing you want that figure to wear. But fitting it to the figure's shape is the hardest part, and can be done in Poser with the morph brush and magnets. And depending on how the original model was built you can completely change the groups if needed without leaving Poser.

Once the clothing matches the shape of the figure you want wearing it, in its default state, it's easy to transfer the rigging and morphs - rigging via fitting room or setup room and morphs via the figure menu in P13.

P13's morph transfer is actually pretty good. I've transferred morphs from one figure to another with completely different geometry and group cuts and and the end result is usually pretty flawless. This is not true in P11 or earlier.

If you can use the morph brush to adjust poke thru then you can use it to do most anything else you'd need it to do.

RedPhantom posted Sat, 17 May 2025 at 8:04 PM Site Admin

Converting the figures does sound like the way to go if you can figure it out. But the problem is, then you are still limited to one figure's clothing and poses. It's great if all I want to use is Vicky's clothes. But I also convert Dawn's, Stephanie's, Antonia's, Alyson's, Miki's, Sydney's, etc. I tend to "borrow" clothing from all the characters I have, even some I don't. I've even used some of M4's stuff on some of the gals. Having to convert a figure every time I want to use a new outfit isn't as practical as converting the clothing, as the clothing takes fewer steps.

Your method works for you, but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Yes, I agree. If you want to mix & match, then individual conversions are the way to go.

I also do them, but I do them manually (magnets & morphbrush), because I dont trust conversion software. That way, I can keep texture stretching and other issues to a minimum.

I did my figure conversions mostly just for heck of it. Hybrids are actually a lot easier. Lol.

But let's be honest: I guess 99% of the remaining Poser users would want a LaFemme that natively could wear G8/G9 clothes.

If I wanted to earn some $$$ and could figure out how to get a working G8/G9 rig into Poser (And bypass copyright problems), that's where I'd start. ;-)

https://www.renderosity.com/premium-tutorials/167/poser-pro-11-tutorial-create-and-customize

This tutorial covers the morph brush, at least the basics. Skip to around the 12 min mark as the first part deals with the face room which no longer exists. It was done in P11 but still applies to 12 and 13 as there haven't been many changes to the morph brush since then. He also covers a bit of magnets and the hair room later in the video. Magnets are good for fitting hair models to different head shapes, that's pretty much all I ever use them for. They can fit clothing too and morph targets can be spawned from them but the morph brush is better for that on clothing because it's easier to control.

Nerd3D did several tutorials for customizing la femme back when she came out, which also covers some tools like the morph brush and editing jcms. They're on page 3 of the Poser tutorial series. Of course there's room for a lot more tutorials covering various tools and techniques. There are several features that have been added to 12 and 13 which makes content creation/customization a bit easier, that no one has ever done any explaining or tutorials for that I'm aware of. I haven't seen anyone delve into actual rigging in any of these either so that's been something I've had to learn on my own through trial and error over the years. There were several youtube tutorials done by Smith-Micro back around P9/2012 with the introduction of weight maps but they were lost in the transition to bondware.

I am fairly well versed with the morph brush, but I will check that out, many thanks. The severe lack of rigging tutorials and sharing said knowledge anywhere is very jarring and frankly, baffling to me. The loss of the SM site and its knowledge base still hurts and I am aware that's when a lot of people/creators/users left Poser entirely.

She was the most elaborate of his Cyborgs, with an incredibly detailed (and hi-rez) endo-skeleton.

I have been experimenting and uploaded all my freebies as ZIPS to Dropbox.  The old files, no modifications, no enhancements, no upgrade, nothing.
As I am too lazy to check everything myself go ahead, make my day and try this link :

leap of faith

check the box left of "name", this will highlight all the files. Then click "download" above that box.

A full report will be expected : worked - swarmed with viruses after following that link - found a lot of pictures of scantily clad women too - etc ...

Must admit that my patience is wearing thin at this point. The resources hosted on ShareCG are seemingly lost and what little is on Renderhub is negligible.

Will we see those resources re-appear ever again?

Because right now, it doesn't look like it.

It is entirely up to the individual owners of those freebies to do this, there is no assistance let alone incentive to do any reupload anywhere. As many of those creators are no longer active or passed, I didn’t even expect them to reappear anywhere.

It is very ambiguous the way it is written; profit would always mean a monetary exchange of some type. It needs further clarification. Overall, it appears that the file could be shared freely, but double-checking with the vendor is the best option to avoid future embarrassment.

The DAZ-Centaur has disappeared into obscurity; I doubt you will ever find it legally.
