Subject: How do I stop "An error occurred importing addon dson : ERROR: DLL"

BJWxMan ( ) posted Mon, 24 February 2025 at 10:13 PM · edited Wed, 21 May 2025 at 6:09 PM

This question has no doubt been asked and answered, but all my Forum searches on this issue direct me to a "DSON will/won't work, DAZ/.Poser blame game".

I donb't really care as the problem I have is when I star-up POSER 13 i get an annoying popup saying "An error occurred importing addon  dson : ERROR: DLL load failed: The specified module could not be found." and I want to stop it.

Yes, I  tried to install the "DSON_Importer_for_Poser_1.2.0.12_Win64" not realising the thing doesn't work in P13.

Fine, I should have tried harder for an answer in the forums.

Whatever.

All I want is to stop seeing  that annoying popup saying "An error occurred importing addon  dson :ERROR: DLL load failed: The specified module could not be found.

Would like a solution for the problem not useless should've done this since I lack a time-travel device to go back and prevent me from doing what I did.

Thank you

You will have to remove DSON. As you noted, it won't work with Poser 13. You'll have to delete it from the runtimes Poser 13 looks at. If you have an older version of Poser where it does work, you can put it into a runtime that the older version looks at, but Poser 13 doesn't. Then you can resave your DSON compatible content in Poser formats and use it in Poser 13.

@RedPhantom

Firstly, Thank you for responding and congratulations on furthering personal record.

In regards to the annoying Popup, I tried scubbing the DSON from P13 using the DSON uninstaller, removing the DSON from the scripts menu, even going through the Local-LocalAPP-Roaming folders and yet it still pops up. I am beginning to accept it will be another glitch to live with like the Docked panels that still move even though I repe4atedly remove 'Dragge-Docked'...sorry, ranting tangent there.

In regards to the DSON work around.  I have installed P11 and following the its-so-easy-a-caveman... instructions, I loaded the DAZ Content stuff into the P11 runtime in my PC and when trying to load the Genisis stuff i get the following popup "Traceback (most recent call last):  File "C:\Program Files\Poser Software\Poser 11\Runtime\libraries\Character\DAZ People\Genesis 2 Base Male py", line 1, in <module>    import dson.dzdsonimporterImportError: No module named dson.dzdsonimporter" and after P11 tries loading the figure it begins looking for textures it can't find.

I realizing I am asking a lot of 'tutorial'-ish stuff but if you can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

In most DSON-specific content, there is a DAZ Companion File and a Poser Companion File. Those need to be installed into the appropriate apps to work correctly. From your description, you placed your DAZ content into one location, P11. But do correct me if I'm misinterpreting your statement. I do know that one version of the DSON Importer was broken and did not work correctly, but I don't remember which one was the culprit.

The DSON plugin is abandoned. It hasn't been updated in a decade. Over that time most of the support sources have gone away. DAZ doesn't even offer support.

Most of the Genesis products, the ones that used DSON, had a companion installer to place the needed textures in the places Poser needed them. I doubt those are still available anywhere.

If you had DSON working on an older install of Poser you can link the runtime libraries from the old install to Poser 13. Then Poser can find the needed textures. You can link all of Poser 11 runtimes using the includes script. Top menu > Scripts > Utility > Link Previous Runtimes,,,

If you don't have a previously working DSON setup you're going to have to find all those textures in the DAZ Studio library and copy them someplace where Poser can find them. Lots of not much fun there.

You should investigate the conversion utilities sold by Ken_1171.  I purchased and used his DUF Prop Converter script with Poser 13 and it works better than the old DSON utility that I previously used for DAZ-to-Poser conversions.  Too bad that neither DAZ nor Rendo seem to be interested in making their products cross-compatible.  It seems to me that vendors would sell more product if they worked with both platforms.

Agreed.

Thanks for the advice Badia01.  I've used Ken_1171 utilities in P12 but didn't even consider them transferable due to lack of instinct basically.  Thanks again.
