Subject: Rent-to-buy

Hi!

Reading an older thread here about Poser vs DAZ someone suggested a subscription model for Poser.

There is another option called rent-to-buy.

For instance in the music world, a company called Splice make an incredibly popular soft synth called Serum. You can start a monthly subscription to Serum and the money will count towards a final purchase. You can pause the subscription at any time. You can also at any time, pay the remaining amount and finalize your ownership of Serum.

Could this be a possibility for Poser? The upside for business is that money can start coming in sooner and that can in turn be used to invest in software updates. The upside for customers is that of a lower bar of entry.

The main downside is technical, need for online checking and the ability to shut down software or partial shutdown of features while the subscription is paused. Although I assume this is already being implemented considering there is a free trial period.

Just some ideas. :)

IMHO, Poser is not yet priced cruelly enough to suit this model.

I would have been tempted for a full upgrade on a CAD package I use: Their 'own' license was simply too expensive up-front, their 'seat rental' eye-watering exorbitant...

In the end, I settled for current 'budget' 2D version for precision 'flat' drafting, accepting the now-stratospheric cost of their premium 2D/3D suite put such beyond my reach...

That said, some-where around P_14 / P_15, I must wonder if thought is given to a 'Poser_Lite'. Depending on its facilities, I might be tempted to run such alongside (concurrent) with 'Full' Poser. Or, given I use but a fraction of Poser facilities plus 'Render Queue' on 'Box', if latter supported by 'P_Lite', two 'P_Lite' instances...

Silly ? Well, consider how much you'd struggle if you could only have one (1) text-document or 'sheet open at a time...

They had a "lite" (standard) version of poser from versions 8-11 and Pro versions. It was discontinued when Bondware bought out Poser, I believe the stated reason was the programing team was too small to support multiple versions. I could be wrong in the reason. That was a while ago and I've slept since then. 😉

"It was discontinued when Bondware bought out Poser,"

True. I reckon there were just too many legacy issues to justify maintaining two 'levels'...

Rent to buy for Poser isn't really a price point far fetched idea. RizomUV, a nice UV mapping software that many use goes for about $200, they have a rent to own plan for $15/month and after 12 months you have a perpetual license.

If people are that broke - they won't be buying content.

You talking about Autocad? Jezuz what an expensive program that is. Unfortunate their LT version doesn't allow 3rd party plugins.

Rent to buy... isn't that just leasing?

hborre ( ) posted Tue, 08 November 2022 at 3:53 PM

It's more like a credit card purchase of an expensive item and having to pay a monthly minimum until you're all paid up.

Well, that's just installments.
