trip·tych
/ˈtriptik/

Noun: triptych; plural noun: triptychs. A painting or relief carving on three panels, typically hinged together side by side. The first triptych paintings appeared at the beginning of the Middle Ages and were created as altarpieces to aid in prayer or tell a story. The triptych has since evolved to be included in nearly every genre of art, often displaying vast three-panel nature and motivational scenes. Create your triptych masterpiece and submit it to the Renderosity Triptych Contest.

As an educational example, the DE AANBIDDING VAN HET LAM GODS painting, one of the most famous tryptichs in the world - in open position. Can be seen in Gent, Belgium. You'll have to try to do better for this contest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghent_Altarpiece For the cultural barbarians I have added a "nudity" tag. Note that this tryptich is hanging in a cathedral for everybody including children to be seen.

Ditto. I see your DE AANBIDDING VAN HET LAM GODS and raise you an ISENHEIM ALTARPIECE... one of my favorite religious paintings, a triptych, and also a good example of the grotesque in religious painting. Something I was always interested in and have studied quite a bit, not that I'm religious.Violence advisory attached if necessary. There's some strange details in the various parts of the painting, worthy of a further image search. Also has an interesting background story.

Rather gruesome. According to what I read on Wikipedia that Tryptich is rather a medical illustration than an artwork. The 2 painters can't compete with "Flemish Primitives" Jan and Hubert Van Eyck however.

I'd have to agree, especially from a purely technical/innovative stance. I do love Northern Renaissance painting...
