"Mystery Science Theater 3000"...for those who watched it, who can forget Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot and Gypsy, the robotic denizens from the Satellite of Love?  Have you missed their antics since Comedy Central and later the SciFi Channel cancelled the series?

Well, for those who may have overlooked them, ALT1701 uploaded .OBJ based meshes of the 'Bots upon ShareCG about a year ago.  Using parts photos and assembly instructions from the JoeCrow.com site as reference, ALT' recreated the puppets with exacting detail, everything from Crow's Tupperware body sections and gimbal lamp arms to Servo's candy dispencing head and engine block chest piece.

Now, in addition to watching vintage episodes on tape, DVD or online video repositories you can stage and render your very own "host segments".

Crow and Servo are packaged together here...

...while Gypsy has her own zip file here...

I personally had no problem importing them into Poser 7.  And being standard .OBJ format, I see no reason why DAZ|Studio should have any problems.  Of course, "as is", the meshes are static when they import.  Then again, other than fapping their "jaws", they didn't move that much.  ;-)

However, for my own personal projects, I took it upon myself to rectify that.  While I have yet to "properly" rig anything into a .CR2 format "character", I did break down the meshes into smaller elements and "parented" the sections into "collective" props.  Now GYpsy can "gawk" in amazement or shock, Servo and open his parrot-like "beak" and turn his gumball "head", and Crow can do both as well as "look" from side to side and up and down with his ping-pong ball "eyes".

But even as static models, they should prove quite useful.  Maybe someone with more skills than I can actually "rig" the buggers.  I know ALT1701 would welcome posing versions of his efforts to share (since we briefly discussed the possibility).

Next up, a view of the S.o.L. bridge.

Sincerely,

Bill

Oooh!  That's beautiful!  :woot:

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

Hi.

here's the simplest rig for gypsy. No need to enter the setup room. Just arange the props and  press the button!

See image.

Your new figure can be found in your main runtime in Libraries:Character:New Figures:

You will need to open the joint editor and turn off bends, but that is about all.

Improvement means change. Change need not mean improvement.

I use Poser 12.0.757, 11.3 and or 2014, on Win10 64bit.

Just to make sure I understand, do you import the .OBJ "whole" and use the hierachy table to "break it down" and then save as a new figure, or do you break it down with another program, say Hexagon or UV Mapper; import the pieces and then save the collection as a single "new figure"?

Oh, concerning Gypsy, I discovered the lower jaw element pokes through the back of the "head" when opened past a few degrees (based upon the location of that black "rod" as the pivot point).  So I deleted a few rows of polygons from the back edge of that piece.  That allowed me to open the jaw to roughly 40 degrees, good enough for a fairly comical "gawk".

Here's a render including the 'Bots, but featuring a 'toon styled Joel Robinson.  I used HiroToon (the H3 version) along with Beth Capsces' add-on morph set to get that sleepy-eyed "stoner" expression Joel Hodgson usually wore.  His iconic "red jumpsuit" referenced in the opening theme song is actually based upon A3's SPVA outfit converted with WW by Fenric.  (I'm a bit more of a Mike Nelson fan, but Joel's suit color is more vibrant and I'm having a dickens of a time trying to capture Mike's "meaty" features.

The background?  That's my personal attempt  at the Satellite of Love's bridge, based upon a "truncated icosahredon".  It's still a work in progress.  I currently have far more panels than is n eeded to capture the angles usually depicted in the series, but I'd rather keep more than required than to deleted too many.  Oh, the "greeblies" festooning the panels?  None of that is geometry.  It's all displacement mapping.  I imported a set of "mix'n'match" DeathStar tiles from Foundation3D and made different type renders, full, outline, and depth-cued that could take advantage of the material nodes in Poser.  I realize the set was continually modified throughout the series, so it's not meant to exactly recreate any specific design, more of an "in the spirit" motif.  Though the gear tooth "G" harkens to the mid "Joel" era when Gizmonic Institute's sub-basement "Deep 13" was the headquarters for Clayton Forrester and TV's Frank.

Sincerely,

Bill
