I have been putting together a fairly complicated piece and whenever I go to save it, it generates a render preview that takes about 15 minutes to complete before doing the save. It is getting vey annoying waiting 15 minutes each time I do an intermediate save (which used to be pretty often, but not anymore). I have searched thru the preferences but have not seen where this can be turned off. How do I turn off the generation of this render preview?

it's saving withthe same options you selected the first time you saved...
Do a "save as" next time.. make sure "options" is on.. it'll pop up a window and one of the options is the preview...
also if you have have "save internally" anything you import like .obj files and such will be save along inside the file instead of just a link back to the orginal file.. makes for a loooong save and a big file size.

Glad it worked for ya. Just wondering how well it worked? I know I sometimes have big/detailed files that take a long time.
Oh. Also I believe that the preview uses the full render settings so turn off all extra light settings in the render room will allow you to have a preview and not take for ever to save ?
