any tips?

Look for the document icon in the top right corner of the browser.

the shaders are called capsfreebies and they load into the browser using the load folder option yet when i open the folder in the carrara folder then nothing is listed where the samples are shown.

It also came with a model of a home and it states its not a valid carrara file when i try to move the model to the scene.

I have an older version, carrara5 , would shaders compiled by newer versions not be compatible with older versions?   The shaders in caps freebies have the  *.cbr extension.

Having an older version is probably the issue. While the shaders may all have .cbr as a file suffix, DAZ has implemented several new shader features since then. So, C5 probably gets to that code and thinks "I have no idea what to do with this" and stops reading the file.

Likewise for the House file. :-/

Yeah it's a pain sometimes. A lot of sites that host freebies don't require that uploaders post versioning info. (They really should though.) So if you're still running older software, you can often hit this roadblock. Unlike Bryce or some other apps, Carrara doesn't make versioning obvious in the file extensions or descriptions.

Many will argue that you should upgrade. Sometimes budget or older hardware prevents this. Not to mention that sometimes the new bugs that show up also make the effort to upgrade less compelling than whatever the new features may make it out to be. (Whether that's the case for Carrara, who knows? But some other software, I've been happy to stick with what has worked. That whole "If it ain't broke..." adage.)

In additon to versioning - some shaders also require the use of add-ons. Plugins by Inagoni or DCG for instance. Anyone uploading shaders using those should mention it though.
