I am building a simple handle bar, I want to do some editing but i want it the same on both sides. for some reason it's setting the green working box off to the left not on the center of the item.. what did I do wrong? how do I fix?

Hexagon, Carrara, Sculptris, and recently Sketchup. 

The simmetry tool is based in the first shape that you model... if you start from a Oval and edit it BEFORE hit the simmetry checkbox, you will end with a wrong simmetry (based in the oval shape).
So you need to add the first primitive and star to use the simmetry right in the beggining.
