I'm trying to figure out where to begin to make a halfway decent procedural leather shader. More or less the kind used to upholster seating and the such. I have been using the cardboard shader as a sort of cheesy cheat for more distant pictures, but I think having something better and more appropriate for closeup shots is due. Suggestions?

I also would be interested in such a shader, and for the very same reasons. Anyone have some cherished leather shader recipes you'd like to share? ;-)

Thanks sparrownightmare. I'll try your "recipe" out tonight. Much appreciated.

No problem. I had a question for you. The old style house you use for your avatar, where did you find it, or did you model it?

Right click to save and change .txt to .cbr on attached, should work.

Texture maps are nice but they do require some attention to the UV mapping. Procedurals are nice because you can avoid that . This is a procedural leather texture that I put together for an assignment some time back.
I don't know if this is the look that you have in mind but, being procedural, it's completely editable.

Here's my version in a Carrara render-

Both images look better if you click for larger image size.
Oooops! Sorry for the sidetracking.
*Bwtr- Thanks Brian, I forgot about them.
*Pauljs- Thanks for the shader.
*MarkBremmer- Wow! That looks exactly like well-worn leather. Any chance for a shader freebie, or at least a glimpse of your shader tree set-up. Thanks.

Yeah M.B., taking a look at that shader would be worthwhile...
Also wondering if my try at a procedural is along the right path. I seem to have the leather skin pattern to it ok by using the cellular pattern in bump & color, but haven't quite figured out how to get some of the occasional wrinkle patterns just right. Tried something using a marble pattern channel in there, but it doesn't quite do what I want.
