I've been experimenting with using 2d "cardboard cutouts" to fill in for background characters and I was wondering: is there a way to quickly align a plane so that it faces the camera? I don't need it to automatically align itself whenever the camera moves, a "one-time" alignment is all I'm looking for.

Have you tried using the Billboard or Splat?
(the Billboard maybe comes with one of the DCG plugins that I am so used to using it that I have forgotten and think it comes naturally with Carrara! A must have!)

You can also use a 'Point At' modifier, so the items are always facing the camera.

Yes thepint at is the best answer... but ifyou have the version 6 theres a misterious primitive called SPLAT that can dothe task...butlike the name says its very "primitive" and you cant see the preview using OpenGL
