I've used this at work a few times.
It's tricky to get what you want, but yes it's powerful.

I've been using the full version for quite some time. It's truly excellent
for the fine level of surfaces (wood grain, leather pores, etc) ... but not
as powerful as I'd like for the coarser level: board patterns, wallpaper
patterns, tiling, etc.

I have Genetica 2 Pro, and its an excellent program for making all kinds of textures. I know the one for making wood grain textures used to be free, but Im not sure if it is anymore.?

In case I sounded too negative, I should add that I use Genetica daily!
The best quality is that it gives you separate and accurate bump maps
along with the colors. There's really no other way to get those from a
pure color pattern; you can manipulate grayscale and edges in Photoshop,
but that requires lots of labor and isn't nearly as good as the Genetica output.

You should really check out Filter Forge. http://www.filterforge.com/
It does color, bump and displacement/normal maps.
And the cool thing is - people upload their own filters, so you're getting new filters and effects daily.
And it's $100 cheaper.
The gallery of effects is pretty cool http://www.filterforge.com/filters/

I have both, Genetica and Filter Forge - lucky for me because I can't decide which one I like better. They are both awesome programs!!!!!

You could also look at DarkTree, which can export both procedural textures for use in several 3D apps, or bitmaps.Steve
