Anyone know how to make boat wakes and animate them?

ISTR this was asked before. however, animating them is non-trivial IMVHO. they spread out from the boat, they decay with distance, their angle varies with speed, they interact with wind-created waves et al. in the old days, some folks useta believe that the "bow wave" determined the maximum speed of the ship.
