Subject: err how do you create RSR/PNG library files for P7?

JoeBlack ( ) posted Fri, 17 August 2007 at 11:31 PM · edited Fri, 07 November 2025 at 4:08 AM

In Poser 4, if you wanted to create RSR image files for library items, you just rendered the figure, pasted the render onto the background, moved the camera so the BG was in view, then saved the figure to the library; the RSR and figure are saved together. How do I do this in Poser7? Every time I try to paste the stupid render to the BG, it won't show up. But if I just "Paste to BG" in preview mode, it DOES work. Why? I want a RENDERED image as an RSR/PNG - they are clearer and look better than RSRs done in preview. I can't see why Poser 7 won't do it!

Sorry for these noob questions but the PDF manual is friggin useless. It answers every other question but mine, and half the time it reads like the author just couldn't be bothered to explain anything in sufficient detail! Serves me right for choosing the download purchase, I suppose.

Cheers

Duh I think I've figured it out. I had to switch from OpenGL to SreeD Preview Mode to see the BG. For some reason OpenGL won't show the BG. Jeez, when will OpenGL ever work on my PC! It never fully works.

All you have to do, set your render size to 91x91, render and then save as png to the library where you want it.  Does that help?  Sharen

The Netherworks has a great free utility python script called Thumber, available at CP and probably Netherworks also (it's included in the hair conversion utilities). You would just save the figure, prop etc. Then use Thumber it creates the size render you specify in the location you specify (does all the window sizing etc for you) then returns to your default window size.

Photoshop saves awsome .PNG files(91 x 91 pixels.)

I don't think you understand what I mean. I want to save items to the library with a rendered thumbnail RSR/PNG. I don't see how rendering at 91x91 and saving as PNG will do that. How do I get it to save the FIGURE along with the PNG? I've tried your method and it won't work. I render the image, but as soon as I select what I want to save to the library - the FIGURE - it switches BACK to the PREVIEW window. And since the Library captures what is in the PREVIEW windows, it doesn't capture what is in the RENDER window.

God this is should be simple, but it's difficult to explain :/

This is stupid, I shouldn't have to download a complete separate utility just to do this simple thing! The manual itself says it's just a matter of selecting items and adding to the library, all I want to do is do what I've always done in Poser 4 which is to render thumbnails of figures and add them to the library! Jeez :/

I gave up on Content Paradise, it is the slowest site on the bloody planet. I couldn't even reach the checkout page, and I have the patience of Job!

SAMS3D ( ) posted Sun, 26 August 2007 at 4:37 AM

So are you asking how to save your figure?  If so, just open the figures library and click the little plus sign at the bottom, it will ask you for a name and then it will save it to the library, then you can create the png for the thumbnail.

Unless there's a special trick to do it more easily, the only way I've found to get 'pretty' png thumbnails for P6-P7 is to do a render, then crop/edit/etc. it in photoshop, and replace the generic preview png Poser automatically creates with the photoshop/other image editing software created one. (And if there is a special trick to do it more easily, mercy, would I ever like to know about it.)

Render your image at 91x91, save it as png, (give it the same name as the one Poser generates) and just replace the png Poser generates automatically with the one you render. You'll get the customary message "..this file already exists, do you want to overwrite.." or something to that effect. Tell it "yes"

If you resave the figure to library, Poser will replace the png again. Keep a rendered version in a seperate folder outside Poser, so you can switch it back to the Poser library folder when ever you need to.

@surreality - If there is a "special trick", I don't know it either :>

@ JoeBlack

When you save an item, you get the shrugging guy?

Did you check the thumbnail display in your general preferences?

Joe,

You have to render at the 91x91, then export your rendered image as a PNG. You can save this exported PNG to a location of your choice, but then later you'll have to move it to the library where Poser has saved the figure, prop, etc. that you're creating the thumbnail for. It also must have the exact same name as the figure, prop etc. Otherwise Poser won't know that the thumbnail goes to the figure. It must overwrite whatever Poser has created, so if you're getting any message about replacing a file, you're on the right track.

Free is for Me, so I went to Netherworks site and DL'd Thumber!  I read the ReadMA, and extracted into my Poser 6 Runtime(As recommended;) but, after running the script, I get this error message?

I just sent Netherworks an IM.

kalon ( ) posted Sun, 26 August 2007 at 12:17 PM

That's probably for the best. Joseph's a very helpful merchant.

I'm no python anything, but I can see from looking at the version of the script in my Poser7 directory versus the one in the Poser 6 directory that he changed the protocol to determine the path location of the script.

You might also put in a support request at the netherworks site, there's a button on the top right.

Meanwhile, I see that Windows' Paint program can open a .BMP, and save as a .PNG!

So you do'nt actually need Photoshop:

Just render to 91 x 91 pixels, and export the image as a .BMP.

Open it in Paint.

Then just save, as a .PNG; to the directory with the Library Preset, with the same name as the Preset.

And be sure to browse away from that Library folder, with Poser, and then browse back; this will reload the thumbnails.

Latexluv ( ) posted Sun, 26 August 2007 at 5:38 PM

It would be nice if Poser DID take the png from a rendered image, particularly for items in the Hair folder. But going to an outside art program (I use Paintshop 8), allows for a lot of artistic freedom for your png. This aspect is great when it's a character package you're making for the Marketplace, which I'm doing now with a V3 (I've already uploaded a V4 character and it's in the testing phase). The Vendor Vali has always had absolutely gorgeous thumbnails for her products.

Following Vali's example, you can get a thumb like this. I also find that 105 X 105 is a better size for the thumbs than the standard 91 X 91.
