Subject: Texturing part of an object in 3D Basics

I have a poser scene I am importing into Carrara. The Scene is a character file in Poser, and when I import it it is all one object. How do I texture just one part of it (in this case, the water in a pool)? Everything I try retextures the entire object, and I am sure there is something simple I am missing :-)

I think you are running into the limitations of Basics. Attached is a screen shot of James shaders in C5Pro.
