Pro version allows BVH import - one of the reasons I upgraded. When I import a Poser/Daz character...and a BVH..the motion is obviously not being applied correctly. The same BVH/figure combo works fine in Daz/Poser.
I've tried using some different BVH import options...but am just guessing and not getting a good result. Does anyone know the correct method for importing/applying BVH files so the result works as intended (eg 'normalwalk.bvh looks like a "normal walk") ?
Thanks

Hi alias59, I meant to respond to your question on the other list but life got in the way. BVH files and premade bone rigs are not always compatible. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. While most BVH sets work great in Poser and imports successfully with either Native or Transposer to a figure that already has it applied in Poser, importing a figure that has bones without animation and then applying BVH doesn't always turn out well in Carrara. Here's the reason: If you import certain BVH files as a skeleton only, you'll see a different bone struction than what is imported with DAZ or Poser files. Apparently, Poser filters the difference somehow and passes the filtering on to Carrara via the Native or Transposer imports. Carrara, however, is very literal and compares the figure bones to the motion file notation and says to itself, "I don't know what to do with this. I'll just have it wiggle around instead of move it." Vastly annoying. Carrara is also very literal with some other file formats too, so it's not just unique to BVH files. Here's the fix: (I hope there is an easier way but this how I get it to work) We need to detach the bone rig from the character. However, Carrara doesn't really want you to do that so here is how you can bend the rules. 1) Import the .cr2 file of choice, select the second figure one notation in the properties tray (the one reight above the Hip bone rig). 2) Then go to the skinning menu and select "Duplicate Attached" This creates a second figure but not a second bone rig. The dupicate figure is the one right above the bone rig now. 3) From the properties tray, select and delete the figure just above the "new" one. 4) Now select the new figure and the bone rig in the properties tray, go back up to the skinning pull-down menu and choose "Detach Skeleton" and delete it the skeleton. 5) Import the BVH file and let it create a new skeleton. Now what's left is a little busy work. The new BVH rig probably won't have fingers or toes. If you need that, then now is the time to add them with Carrara's bone tool. Once you've got the bones set, scale the figure and align it to the new rig in reference position. From there you can move the bones around to match the figure. Finally, when you are happy with alignment, attach the bones back to the figure. The BVH motion will now be attached to your figure. Yep, it's a hassle. So, I usually apply the animation in Poser and just import it. On the plus side, If you are creating your own figure in Carrara, you can just import a BVH rig WITHOUT animation, customize it, attach it your figure and then import animation data. For that matter, you can create a Carrara-ized BVH rig that can replace the imported rigs - it will be a BVH animation import friendly bone structure. Whew, hope this helps. Mark

Thanks Mark....I appreciate the complete answer..
BTW to other forum readers....(who are not already gurus) ... I highly ecommend Mark's tutorial at VTC.com...I've got the other Carrara videos/books...and got the most use from the VTC series. Plus you get access (if you do the monthly option) to all the other VTC tutorials. (Better than Lynda.com IMHO.)
