My tests seem to show that an object in a Primivol plugin "fog" does not cast shadows on the fog. Am I doing something wrong or is this just the way it works? Thanks in advance. ED

Hello Ed,

Volumetric objects in Carrara can't cast shadows (Primivol as well as Carrara's volumetric primitives). It a limitation due to the current implementation of this kind of primitive inside Carrara: volumetric primitives are rendered in there own space, appart from the scene. It's this same limitation that makes the distant lights the only one available for volume lighting. I sent these remarks to Eovia when I was working on Primivol and I hope the SDK will show some improvment for Carrara 5.

Regards,
Julien

That's interesting because I think the fire primitive in Carrara does cast a shadow. -Kix

Shadows from clouds? No problem! ;-)

The problem is to get the clouds (primivol fog) to accept a shadow like the 3d shadows in a light cone. I wasn't very clear.

Ed, apologies, you were perfectly clear. I was simply demonstrating a trick to get shadows from clouds - as Julien says, it's not possible directly but by coloring the light to black and outputting a light map using Baker I produced this image. I've no solution to your problem, I'm afraid. Unless you can use metaballs to fake it using shadow-catchers or something.
